leashes
by Judy S
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
I have 2 puppies that I'm trying to leash train. Do any of you use the single leash that "splits" into 2 leads (sort of forms a "Y") Otherwise, I'm afraid that I'll have to split myself!

DISCUSSION:

I have to split myself. I have 2 boys and one loves to be ahead of everyone (can't stand walking behind others) and the other one is the slow poke who loves to stop and nip at every grass patch he can - so the one "Y" lead doesn't work for me. Besides, when one is doing his "business" - i don't like the other to be too close and accidentally "trip" into the mess.

Judy, all you need is a coupler that fastens to each of their collars and also to one leash. You can order one from Omaha Vaccine or R.C. Steele or any other of the catalogs. They're usually about 6-12 inches long. Works best if the two dogs are similar size.....that is, not a lab and a Maltese!!

I use a simple Resco show leash, not too narrow. The softer the better. I also do a lot of playing on lead before I expect the pup to actually go the way I want it to. We use squeeky toys and I often have a brush I tap on the groud several feet ahead so the pup will run up to it and get moving in the right direction eventually. First inside, then out on the grass. Grass is the hardest so I leave it till they learn on cement first. With some breeds tidbits are useful but I find that Maltese are not all that interested in food during training. If they are great use it. Very good for breed show training to get the pup to look up to you and 'ask for it'(the win that is).

Judy, I've seen the coupler that Anne mentioned at Petsmart, so you may not have to order one.

Hi Judy, we used individual 6ft training leads to leash train the Beasties. Our trainer didn't recomment the split lead (although there were 2 of us so we took one Beastie each) but said if they are properly leash trained you can still successfully walk two together and they should behave themselves.

Judy, I use a coupler to take Niki and Gizmo to the groomers or the vet's office - anywhere they both need to go, when I don't want them to feel free to explore the area. But for walks around our residential neighborhood, I use separate leashes leashes so that they CAN explore a bit - Gizmo likes to "forge ahead" and Niki likes to "stop and smell the roses". I guess if we were serious walkers (or if I ever get them to obedience training...), I might have to rethink this, but we just sort of go out and I let them show me all the interesting things at ground level that I might miss if they weren't pointing them out to me!
