Vitamins too large
by Shirley
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
I am having the same problem with vitamins that someone had with heart pills a few weeks ago. I have tried several vitamins, they are chewable but large. With most pills, I just put a little peanut butter on them and Sara gobbles them up. But she doesn't like vitamins, guess they don't smell good and she just won't take them. I have even tried crumbling them in her food, that doesn't work either. She doesn't eat very much, I guess the vitamin taste overpowers the food. Since she eats so little I think she need the vitamims. Does anyone know a good small vitamin that really taste great?

DISCUSSION:

It's messy and an awful, ucchy brown color but our vet gave us a liquid vitamin to squirt in Arthur's mouth when he wasn't feeling well. Bubba seems to think it tastes great because he always tries to lick Arthur's face clean.

There are two things to try - one if you have other dogs, one if your Fur babe is an only child. If you have other dogs, get them all togther and give the other two a normal treat. Then give Sara a small amout (maybe 1/4) of the pill. She will think that's what the othe3r dogs got too, and eat it. Or she'll know if she doesn't eat it the other dogs will! If Sara's an only child, consider feeding her twice a day. Here's the catch: you mix a little bit of canned food in with the dry & the vitamin. The canned food over powers almost everything, and even if it doesn't work, she has to get through the pill to eat the canned food. I've been using this on my Poodle for almost a year now...he never gets tired of the canned food as long sa you get different flavors (its doesn't upset his tummy exeot if I switch brands). Be foreward: I gave my 4 pound Maltese, Clover, X-tra strength puppy vitamins....he know weight 9 pounds!~Karen&the C-dog

Yes, I'm interested too. I got some powdery stuff to sprinkle on food, but Azhsie does't seem to go for it. A liquid in a dropper bottle would be good. The only thing I could find was good for puppies up to 12 weeks. Then after that, it's pills. There must be a liquid out there somewhere. Also, a funny aside...I got a sample bag of puppy food. Gave Ahzsie one of the nuggets and it was more like a jawbreaker in his little mouth. Very funny. I also find that he likes blueberries. But I can't give him a whole blueberry -- same problem. So I give him 1/2 or 1/4 of a berry and he scoffs them up.

Isabel - HA HA HA your Ahszie sounds like my Diesel - full grown but still small at 3.5 lbs. His head seems especially small - therefore his mouth is as well. I got this new prescription dry food (to help them clean their teeth) and with Turbo - it's fine - but with Diesel - he picked on up and just sat there with this huge chunk in his mouth and looked like he didn't know where to go from there. (keep in mind, i got the small kibble). He does like it enough to try to chew - and he does. It just takes forever....hee hee - so cute.

I think Dottie is talking about Enervite, which is what I give my Puff. You squirt it into their mouth with a plastic syringe and they love the taste! I never get any arguements when its vitamin time. Enervite comes in a tube which you use to fill the syringe, the syringe has markings so you give the proper amount. It can be found in most pet stores. I prefer this to a pill, which can go right through their digestive systems before it gets completely disolved.

hi - i just read your message on the large vitamin dilemma. i have two 25 week old fur-babies and the one will take a pet tab but the other one will not - so the breeder recommended stuff called Nutri-CAL. you can buy it in pet supermarket - it comes in a tube that looks like toothpaste - you squeeze some out on your finger and they lick it off - they love it !!! good luck and keep us posted licks and wags disneyrn

Shirley, With Tiffini we play a game. I put the pill on the floor and pretend I am going to take it & she tries to beat me to it. I am one of those who gives a half a tum twice a day to help the tearstaining, and we play the game here as well.

I found Arthur's vitamin bottle in the back of the cabinet. I swear these animals have more meds than I do. More shampoos too. The bottle says "vitamin supplement" on it and it smells like Pet Tabs. My vet pasted her label over the front of it so I can't read the rest of the original label. In her handwriting it looks like "Lisotinic" 1cc per 5 lbs of body weight. Sandy's Enervite sounds easier to use.
