cats with maltese?
by Shannon
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
I am considering getting a maltese, but the thing is I already have a cat. I was wondering if maltese get along w/ cats?

DISCUSSION:

Shannon: When I first got my Pete I had two inside cats (one has gone to Rainbow Bridge) Pete took right to my cats and actually sometimes I think he thinks he is a cat now. Both my cats had been declawed so there was no danger of Pete being hurt. I now have a new 1 yr old Maltese Ty and he loves to chase the cat everytime he comes in the room. Harley the cat loves to play with both Pete and Ty. This is just my experience but all of the pets get along great. Good Luck

Shannon, I have two cats a 22pound male and a 11 pound female, both are declawed. I, also, have a five pound 9 month old male maltese (Loki). All Loki wants to do is play with them. The female pretty much just stays out of the reach of the puppy, but the male puts up with Loki to a point and then whap. Even though neither of the cats has tried to hurt Loki, I think that if the cats had not already been declawed when Loki came to live with us I would probably have had it done. You know your cats temperment, judge accordingly, but I don't think you have to worry about a new puppy hurting the cat.

Shannon--Before we got Cubbie, we had a cat named Jody. Jody wasn't declawed and he was so much bigger than Cubbie. What I did was keep the cat in the basement and over a month's time, I introduced Jody to Cubbie. Cubbie grew up with Jody and they became best fur buddies. Jody is now at Rainbow Bridge. Cubbie sure did miss him. Now, we have another cat named BJ. BJ is declawed. We had BJ since he was a kitten, so he grew up with Cubbie! They get along fine, but not as famously as Jody did with Cubbie. Relax, it will be just fine.

Shannon. We have 2 "killer" cats; male littermates. We got them as kittens when Popcorn was about 3 months old. They are best friends and romp together a lot. These cats are now twice the size of Popcorn and keep the ground squirrel and gopher population to a minimum. They catch lizards and bring them inside Popcorn's fence, so he can play at being a "killer" too, but he just barks at them. I don't think you'll have any problems, aslong as the cats don't get jealous. Good luck!.

We have 3 enormous, neutered tomcats who weigh twice as much as our Maltese. Or maybe more, these are really awesome cats. They play with the dogs, chase the dogs, the dogs chase them. Now and then we'll hear a short yelp that means someone got too rough, but no one has ever drawn blood. They don't even stop playing for more than a second. Trigger (cat) had a cute trick when Arthur (Malty) was a pup. Trigger would lay down and let Arthur climb on his stomach, then he would wrap his front legs around him and start rocking Arthur back and forth until he could launch him across the floor. When Arthur quit sliding he'd run back for more.

Our 11 pound American Shorthair, Tiger, does have his claws, but I keep them clipped. He and Noah hit it off almost immediately. They adore each other. Noah just walked up to him and licked him in the face. They are so cute together. Don't worry.

Five pound Phoebe absolutely loves our fourteen pound Maine Coon cat! It's mutual! They wrestle, romp, chase each other - cuddle up on the couch together and are truly best buddies.

Dottie - your story is just tooooooo funny. i wish i had both - but am terribly allergic to cats (but love them from afar anyways). I too think it'll be fine, most cats are smart enough to stay away from something they don't like and eventually learn to at least tolerate but not hurt. we did have both cats and pekingnese when i was younger - one alley cat whom we found - who "tolerated" the dogs playfulness - but it didn't take long for the dogs to learn who was the boss. the other cat we got as a kitten and got along fine with both doggies.....very playful group ....with the boss watching over them from a safe distance.

Shannon....I brought a 1 1/2 yr lod maltie into a house where there are 2 cats. The first days they ignored each other,Now they tolerate each other. They do funny things to antagonize each other.Cats climb into dakota's crate for a nap....or they bat each other in the rear when one walks by! I was leary about brining them together and my worries have been unfounded >they get along great now. I woulnt let having a cat stop u from getting a maltese.

Hi Shannon, We have two Maltese, Cody (4) and Ashleigh (3), we volunteer for the humane society and have been a foster home for this kitten, 12 weeks old. Let me put it to you this way, we most likely will be adopting him as they LOVE the "baby". I introduced him to them as the new baby, and they are protective of him, and have their own way of letting him know the ropes around here, and what is and is not acceptable to them!! Give it a try, you might be pleasantly surprised!! good luck,
