P'ing on carpet
by Esmeralda
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
My little Coconut is 11 months and she still continues to do wee-wee on the carpet. I just don't know what to do to break this pattern. I take her out every two hours and she still has accidents at least once a day. Is this normal or could my baby have a problem that I might be overlooking. She is my pride and joy and I want her with me all the time but I'm afraid to give her free run of the house until she's fully trained. Please give me advice and help. I want to do what's best for my little girl and if I'm doing something wrong I need to know. Thank you...

DISCUSSION:

If she's 11 months old she should have the hang of houebreaking by now (unless you got her recently), so if I were you I'd take her to the vet to find out of there's a medical reason for this. Coconut may be incontinent. I have a friend who has an Italian Greyhound who's incontinent, and my friend has to take her out every four hours or so. Dogs that have a real bad problem with it can wear diapers, but it doesn't sound like Coconut's is that extreme. Anyway, if you go the the vet and eliminate medical reasons, you'll know that it's a training/behavioral thing and can concentrate on it.

Esmeralda, You don't say whether Coconut is paper trained or not. First thing is, clean your carpets. Second, go back to step one and start over. It isn't going to take more than a week or two at her age. Confine her to a safe, uncarpeted area when you can't be watching her every minute. Take her out or to her papers before and after playing, eating, drinking, and sleeping. Talk to her about what you expect and praise her when she does it. When you take her to the carpeted area leash her to you. She won't want to potty in your presence. Take her to potty at least every two hours. You'll have this problem solved in less than 2 weeks and Coconut will have a better understanding of what is expected of her. You can do it.

You didn't say how you originally "potty trained" her. But at 10 mos. and you take her out every 2 hrs., I would say start all over again, or perhaps she does have a problem, see your vet. Some doggies can hold longer than others, maybe take her out every hr. and then praise her, maybe even give her a small treat. See if you can get her to bark to go out.

We had originally started our training with wee-wee pads until all of her shots were completely finished so she wouldn't catch anything. After about 5 months we started taking Coconut outside at regular intervals and this took about 1 month before she finally realized that she was to go potty outside. She had been accident-free for months and then out of nowhere she has started having frequent accidents in the house. I'm thinking that she might have a urinary problem and I plan to take her to the vet first thing Monday morning. Hopefully we will get answers and if not I'm not sure why she's reverted back to going on the carpet.

Has Coconut been spayed yet? Could she be exhibiting silent heat cycles? As a past Persian Cat breeder, I had similar problems with whole females at approximately one year of age. Pat
