ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Hi, me and mom want a small dog we have narrowed it down to a matlese! We think it is a wonderful breed... Today me and my mom were at the mall today and my mom suggested we go to the pet store because she wanted to see a maltese in person... SO we decided to go into the visiting room where you can see and play with the puppy.. The little girl was very very very hyper and was jumping and biting and running all around( she is 5 months old)..We were wondering if all maltese are very hyper! (just a reminder you we would never buy a maltese at a petshop my mom just wanted to view one and see its behavhior and size!).. :)
DISCUSSION:
Hi Kay, just to give you an idea of how hyper my puppy is: his name is turbo. Actually he is now three years old and very calm. When he first came to live with us he was constantly running around, he wore me out! I think all puppies are hyper, and a maltese is your best bet for a perfect dog.

Kay: No, not all maltese are hyper. The one you held from that horrible pet store was hyper probably because--
#1--She's been in a cage for 5 months
#2--She was let out of the cage and was so excited that she could run and jump and play
#3--She was experiencing "human contact" which pet shop pups don't get to do very much
#4--She could have been ill with a numerous amount of infectious diseases. Most pet store pups are very ill--it's not the animals fault of course--but we cannot let the sad eyes of the puppies in the windows make us buy. We are only contributing to the slime who run puppymills if we do. We must just walk past and not stop and look. If I were to hold one I might get attached--almost happened to me once--so I don't ever go in. Please contact a breeder and go to the breeders home and hold a puppy. Good Luck!

Jade, I love the name Turbo. Our little girl's name is Snowball but my husband says she's more like a Snowstorm. I happen to agree--she goes 100 miles per hour and can outrun him on the track.

Hey there! Even though I agree with Angel, she was a little, well, very harsh and I know that if I were you her comment would've made me feel as if I'd done something wrong by even going in a pet store. Though she was harsh, what she said is true, those poor puppies in the mall pet shops are caged 24\7, are often very sick, and very neglected. And even though the humane part of you might say "Well then if that's the case, I'll rescue the poor thing" (I've said this to myself before) if you buy the puppy, you are contributing to the continuation of these horrible shops and their inhumane practices. Your best bet is to find a responsible, caring breeder that is very knowledgeable about the breed and can help you at any time that you need it. Good luck in finding that perfect baby for you and your mom!

Ditto on what Angel said! Although different dogs can certainly behave differently. Pheobe is "Miss Mellow", but can go ninety miles a minute when she wants to. Another pup that was available when I got her had the same father & different mother & that dog was wound up like a ten day clock! It's my best advice when I tell you to take your time, visit shows and breeders in your area to get a better idea of the type of dog you are looking for. PLEASE - steer clear of the pet shops! Not only do I not buy animals there I refuse to purchase so much as a tidbit from any shop that sells cats or dogs!
