new puppy
by Jennifer and Tanner
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Well, Our family got a new addition to our family. An 8 month old girl papillion. I would apriciate all the advice on how to introduce Cinder( new puppy) to Tanner. Cinder is also a very small dog, only 3 pounds right now. My question is they are of opposite sex, should I never leave them alone together? They both are off to the vet to have surgery next week.(spayed and nutered). I realy need as much advice as possible, Cinder is a rescue baby. Please help! Thank you.Jennifer Tanner and Cinder

DISCUSSION:

I would keep an eye on them just in case - but most of the time the female is not receptive of the male unless she is in heat. So it's unlikely they'll be doing any funny business together. As for keeping them together afterwards - there's no problem - as long as they kinda get along. My brother's female and my two boys are fine together. The female is more of the loner type and always sits in her corner (and I do mean "her" corner) and the boys just leave her alone -- for the most part until they all get a little wired and run circles in the house.

I would introduce them and not leave them alone together until you are sure that they get along & the week prior to surgery is a good grace period. One thing you may discover, when you have them altered at the same time - they will both come home smelling of the vet's office and believe it or not will develop a bond because of it!

Thanks for the suggestions, However when I took Cinder( who we call cindy) to the vet he said she was underweight and he won't do the surgery until she gains alittle more. So Tanner will go in on Friday. What is safe play? They chase each other around and bark and snip but their tails are wagging, when should I intervene? Thanks.....Jennifer Tanner and Cindy

Jennifer, you asked about safe play: Here's my description of what goes on around here... My roommate has a 3-month-old Lab puppy. Since the day she got here, Binky (my malt) and Maggie have been playing gleefully. They make some horrible sounds and from looking at them you'd think they were trying to kill each other, but that's just how they play. It's possible that they both just like to play rough, but neither one has ever hurt the other, and if somebody squeals, the other backs off. The size difference is increasing as Maggie grows, but they still play like crazy. Since Tanner and Cindy are both small, you should have even less to worry about. Just watch them for awhile and if they love what they're doing, let them be. Tail wagging is a good sign. And by all means, enjoy the show! Sometimes I think I could sell ringside seats...
