good traveling companion?
by Rory Lackey
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Am looking for a small breed dog for a traveling companion. My wife and I have recently purchaced a camper. Do you think the Maltese would make a good traveling companion?

DISCUSSION:

Absolutely. My furbaby goes with me all around the country. She has taken the plane several times, subways, boats and even cable cars. It's a matter of training them from puppy stage to get used to different sensations. Good luck!

Rory, my Buster certainly loves riding in the car. But I can't speak for doing alot of traveling. I know several people on this site do travel alot and take their malts especially ShelleyJ, KoKo and Shayna who are traveling right now. So I guess the answer to your question is yes.

Shelley and her hubby (on vacation now) takes their two maltese travelling for several weeks at a time with them in the motor home - they travel really well from what I've heard.
Deanna (Moose & Squirrel)
Yes! Mine is "double-trained." too. he will use wee-wee pads or go outside. Ours has been everywhere with us. He loves it!

We bought a travel trailer just for our Maltese. She loves to travel and has been all over the country. When we aren't at work she goes with us just about everywhere we go. I'd get him/her used to car travel early though if you get a puppy. Good luck.

Rory, my Phoebe is a terrific traveler - but when I first got her she would get car sick. I started taking her out every day for a few minute ride, increasing the time and she is an old pro at traveling now! Most small breeds make good travelers! Please read this web-site through and through, as it is simply chock full of the best information available on this wonderful breed of dog!

When we took our first maltese to the vet for a check up the first thing he said is that the breed is the best traveler. We've been seeing the proof of this for over twelve years now. They are happy anywhere they go as long as they are with you.

Rory, My 5 year old Maltese named Aloysius travels wonderfully. We fly regularly (usually flights under 2 hours) he is on the subway in New York City every weekend, my husband puts him in his bycycles basket and rides him to the park, and he's been on a few boats. Besides being extremely portable, Maltese do not shed, can be trained to use wee wee pads in case of inclemate weather and love meeting new people. We keep Aly cut in a puppy cut (about 2 inches of hair) so that he is easily groomed. I wash him in the kitchen sink about every 2-3 weeks. Best Wishes for your search for a new traveling companion!

Rory, My little Orion travels all the time with me. Long plane trips. Across the country in the car. Boat rides she even goes canoeing with us ( we had a life vest made for her). I have 3 dogs Orion is the only one that loves to travel. I take her to hotels, stores, everywhere. Good luck on your companion search. If you find that you want a maltese you will love the little fur babies.
