weight progression?
by Margaret Levitt
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
I would like to know the weight progression of a Maltese puppy after 12 weeks old, probably up to 1 year old. Thank you,

DISCUSSION:

Well - it has been stated that the weight at twelve weeks, times two, plus one is a simple way to 'guesstimate' the full adult weight of a Maltese. At fourteen weeks my Phoebe weighed right at two pounds, I had her spayed at six months and she weighed three pounds nine ounces, three weeks after being spayed she weighed four pounds eight ounces, and now at the age of ten months she is a level five pounds. However, I must add that weight is not everything - I have seen larger Maltese that actually weighed less! My Yorkie was only four pounds and Phoebe is the same size that he was - just more hair.

Margaret, that varies from dog to dog. I have two full grown Maltese, one is 9 lbs. other is 5 lbs. Have a great day!

My formula for eventual weight was always double the weight at 11 weeks. It works pretty well. It's true that a tall Maltese can weigh less ( and be a little more elegant) than a short legged chunky Maltese. With all the coat it is hard to guesstamate weight unless you get your hands on the dog. It's quite a trick to get the perfect height and weight for the best balanced Maltese in the show ring.

The formula Leslie mentioned really does give us an idea about how much they will weigh when grown. Noah was the largest pup in the litter. He was 3 pounds at 12 weeks and ended up at 8.5 pounds. He is still smaller then my cat.

According to Maltese books take the weight at 11 weeks old and double that. That is how much your puppy should end up. My puppy at 11 weeks old weight in at 1.80 pounds. The vet thinks she'll weigh just over 3 pounds. She just turned 7 months old and is 2.14 pounds. Still running small, we want her to be a little bigger. good luck. The math is pretty close.
