Maltese and allergies
by Doreen
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
My boys (10 and 12), my husband and myself have seriously been thinking of adding a dog to our family. Unfortunately my oldest son has asthma and has been known to be allergic to some dogs and cats. After talking to many people and our children's doctor it seems that a maltese may be the way to go. Has anyone been allergic to certain animals and was fine with a maltese? I would really appreciate any help you could give me.

DISCUSSION:

Hi Doreen....I also have allergies and am on medicine for them. I find that if I keep my furbaby bathed regularly she doesn't bother me but if I dont keep her well groomed her hair does bother my eyes from time to time. I hope this helps a little! Good luck and keep us posted on what you decide!

Check the archives for this, it was a topic just a little while ago (might have even had the same title, I'm not sure)

Doreen, check out Jay post on the Main Page on this site. In the Directory there is a topic of "Maltese & Allergies". Hopefully this will help some.

My daughter has asthma and she had bought my little male maltese for herself. She was told that if you were allergic to dogs (which she wasn't) a maltese was the way to go. She had to give the maltese to me because she was deathly allergic to it. We have had other dogs in the past and they never bothered her at all. My son's girlfriend was allergic to my little male also. She has asthma too. I bathed my male every week but it didn't help with the allergies.

I just read Jay Bianco's article about Maltese dogs and allergies. I am a sever allergy sufferer. I have a shih tzu along with my five year old maltese and although contact with the Shih Tzu's fur makes me break out in an itchy rash almost immediatly, having the maltese sleep in my bed (much to my allergist's objections) does not effect me. I was thinking of getting a smooth coat Fox Terrier and again, I broke out into a rash within 10 minutes of contact with his fur and saliva. I beleive it IS possible to be allergic to certain breeds of dogs. The two I have are both puppy cut and receive baths at the same frequency, so that has nothing to do with it.
