tear stains under eyes
by celeste d'apuzzo
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
If anyone has any advice on my 1 year old male maltese, he has these brown stains under his eyes, I used cornstarch like the vet said but to no avail. anyone have any suggestions? he's a great pet and a beautiful boy, but those stains are unsightly. thanks for any and all help!!!

DISCUSSION:

My vet recommended the hypoallergetic eye makeup remover to remove those stains and it doesn't sting or hurt a bit. I tried it on my own eyes first to see if it would hurt and it didn't so I used it on my baby and she looks absolutely great. I've been using Cover Girl products because they are gentle. You could check with your vet to see what he/she says. As for the corn starch for those occasional little knots/mats corn starch works wonders when worked through their coat. It really does remove the knots. Try it, your baby will like it. I know mine did.

dear celeste: you have hit on the most frequently talked about topic for maltese owners, I think! Go to the archive at this site - there are many, many remedies suggested for this common problem. You might have to try a couple before you find one that works for you - but I'm sure you will! good luck!

Just in case this hasn't been thought of - every little health problem can make a clean eyed Maltese tear stain - tonsilitis, pharyngitis, any kind of worms including tapes from fleas and many other minor ailments that might not be suspected as a cause by the vet because they consider this a cosmetic problem and not a health problem - unless they see a LOT of Maltese. Have your vet check everything. I never heard of eye makeup remover being used - great idea - thanks.
