Shampoo/ Cond. Survey
by Carla
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Hi everyone!!! I've been out of commission for awhile (my mom's been sick) but I'm back now... Haven't been posting or reading the posts in awhile. Missed it sooo much!!!! Ok onto the survey. I am in search of a good shampoo and conditioner for Bailey and Natasha. They both are in puppy cuts...and tend to have woolie hair (especially Natasha) Anyway....What do you all use? Do you use a whitener? How often? Do you use a leave in conditioner or a deep conditioner every so often? What brand works the best? How often do you bathe your puppies? BTW~Natasha was just spayed on Thursday...she is doing really well today! She was down and out for a couple of days. Thanks for your input on the shampoo and conditioner survey...hugs to all.....Bailey, Natasha, and Carla
DISCUSSION:
Carla: I give my girls a bath once a week. I use Petsilk products on them. Once a month I use Pantene Pro V shampoo and conditioner.

Hi Carla, I normally give Snowy a bath every week but have streched it to 2 weeks in the winter. I use a puppy shampoo eventhough Snowy is already 1 year old. The name of the shampoo is Aristopet and it is an Australian product so I think it is only available in Australia. Then I use a Laser Lites Conditioner (also Australian) which I wash out and finally the Vellus conditioner (finally something from US!) which can be left in but I still do a quick rinse through. I bought E-Z Groom Crystal White Enzyme Shampoo (a whitening shampoo) recently and used it yesterday. I found that though I try to condition & condition after that, it still left Snowy's hair dryer than normal (as when I used the puppy shampoo). The E-Z Groom was supposed to remove tear, urine etc stain but I found that it didn't work that well. However it could be that it has to be repeated a couple of times before there is a difference or that I didn't leave it in long enough (it said 6-8 mins and poor Snowy was already shivering after 2 minutes eventhough the bathroom was heated!) I think I am reverting back to the formula that has worked for so long now i.e. the puppy shampoo, conditioner & leave-in conditioner (which I rinse out!)

Welcome Back Carla. I use the Vellus Products on Buster. I use the Vellus Shampoo and Conditioner. Buster gets bathed every 2 to 3 weeks depending on how dirty he gets. I use the Shampoo and Conditioner the first 3 baths then switch to the Vellus Clarifying Shampoo on the 3rd bathing. When I brush him I use the Vellus Static Stabilizer. Works great and I love it. Highly recommend the Vellus Products.

I bathe Noah about every 10 days but I may have to switch to weekly because I still have a problem with tangling as his coat is very thick. I use a whitening shampoo about once a month but I also noticed a slight drying of the coat when using this. I am currently using Coat Handlers premium shampoo followed by the Coat Handlers conditioner. They also make a tearless shampoo which would be good for puppies. Coat Handlers can be found in the Foster & Smith catalog.

I use L'Oreal Kids shampoo and conditioner and Pet Silk oil.

Hi Carla -- do I have a red-hot tip for you! It's called "Wu-Pi Magic Show Coat Conditioner and Tangle Magic Concentrate". All you need is one teaspoonful in your normal conditioner, which needs to be rinsed out. I brushed the Beasties today for the first time since their last bath 1 week ago.......NO KNOTS!!(no kidding!) And their hair is so soft and silky. You can also make up a grooming spray with the Wu Pi, conditioner and water. This tip was given to me by an Australian breeder (thank you, thank you, thank you Hilary!) I tried the E-Z Groom Crystal White enzyme shampoo last week too and thought it was pretty good (but the Beasties hadn't been bathed for ages...that may have had something to do with their newly-acquired whiteness! I used the LaserLites balsam conditioner with the Wu Pi and was very happy with it. I also like the CoatHandler conditioner and shampoo....I have the "15 for one" of each. I've heard that the "5 for one" shampoo is much gentler but the "15 for 1" is more of a clarifier and shouldn't be used exclusively. Next I plan to try Vellus.....

Hi Carla! Glad to have you back. Well, I use Loreal Kids shampoo/conditioner (no tears, fine hair) every week and every so often (6 weeks...) I use a whitener shampoo, Therapet's Brilliant Blue followed by a Pantene conditioner to add sparkle to Otto's coat. The Loreal Kids stuff is FUN! It is in bright strange-shaped bottles, and it smells GOOD!!! Otto loves his bathtime!

Hi Everyone, I too am a big fan of the Pantene Pro-V (once a week), but I also found that VO5 Hot oil treament once a month works very well to keep them soft and silky and tangle free. Unfortunately, I haven't found a shampoo specififally meant for dogs, that has given the same results as these two products.

My vet recommended Head and Shoulders to kill fleas and not hurt the small puppy. Have used it twice and it works great. Be careful of the eyes as it is harmful to their eyes. Just a suggestion!

I have four little Maltese and use "systeme Biolage"which I get from a beauty salon-shampoo is their hydrating shampoo and conditioner is their detangling solution-For extra whitness I use #1 all systems professional formula whitening shampoo-it needs to be diluted 5 to 1 does not strip the hair and leaves a nice shine-I shampoo with Biolage first rinse-then use the whitener-The blue color will disappear after a minute or so then I rinse and use the conditioner-which I leave on for a minute or two and then wash out-I bath my guys weekly-sometimes 10 days and there is no matting or tangeling between baths- I do brush at least every other day-They are all in coat but not show coat at this time--Hope this helps-Tatiana,Love,Andy,M.C.(Marshmellow Creme) and Sophie

Hi Libby! Where can I find the Vellus product's? Thanx:)

I use Loreal Kids shampoo as well. It's gentle on their eyes and smells wonderful. As far as a conditioner I tried Nexus Humectress (a leave in conditioner) and it works absolutely wonderful. In fact, I use it in between shampoos whenever I am brushing our girl and it works great to keep her coat from tangling. My daughter has even recommended Johnson's No more tangles but I haven't tried it. It might in fact work too.

I took someone's advice and bought Thermasilk Shampoo and Conditioner for human hair use. I bathed Truffles in it last night and was amazed how quickly I was able to blow dry/brush her out without any pulling or matting. I then use a little BioSilk on her hair. She is silky, silky, silky!! I have to hold onto her tighter to keep her from slipping out of my grasp, she is so slippery. She glistens and is very white. I was really impressed with this product. She has a long beautiful coat and now she looks better than ever. Truffles and I are getting ready to fly to Baltimore, MD Saturday right after attending the Houston Dog Show. She will look so pretty for her trip. She did her regular run around the upstairs after I finished grooming her last night and she looked like sparkling white flying chiffon!
