Going on the rug
by Deanna
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Help - I need suggestions. Kiwi, our adorable 9 year old baby urinates on the rug several times a week. It used to be only when we were out; but now she sometimes does it when we are at home. She is healthy and has a doggie door which she uses regularly. She will sometimes go 5 days withou "going" and never does it when she is visiting. I don't want to confine her - especially because I never know when she'll do it. She also has a dog brother (Sheltie) to keep her company. Please help -- thanks.

DISCUSSION:

Deanna: I can totally relate. Since we have become owned by our three maltese--gone are my rugs! I had beautiful rugs in my kitchen and bath, but every time I bring them out--one of my girls goes potty on them:( So I gave up and put my rugs in the attic. I can't wait to read the advice given by others. I miss my rugs:) Take care!

I have a year old female named Shelby. When we leave her alone she would #2 on the carpet. So instead of confining her I tried putting newspaper where she usually goes. And it has worked great!! She only had one spot where she would go. I'm not sure if your little one has a special spot or not. Hope it works for you.

Maybe the little brother went there first and now she goes too. Once the place is marked it's almost impossible to do something. The smell is in and is going to attract them. And it's very difficult to get rid of the smell. I have two persian rugs that my late lhasa and my daughters' shi tzu messed up. Had to give them to a professional persian rug cleaner. He had a special product that contained enzymes who eat the bacteries in the urine. Now my big rug is off limit to Alex when we are not in the room. He has not done anything to the small rug ; so the cleaner and his product must have done a good job. I don't know the name of the product. I tried soap and water, ammonia (not a good idea), vinegar, and a bunch of products from the pet store, to no avail. The first thing I used was soap and water, and then the red color in the rug bleeded. The cleaner told me that in order not to have that happen, I should have poured vinegar on it in the 30 mn following the soiling. After 30 mn it's to late and the colors red and blue might bleed on cleaning. Well, all of this is not helping you and frankly I think nothing will besides confining you little ones to another area.

I know what you mean...I spent Sunday afternoon spot cleaning my carpet! It seems that Buddy is still having accidents, when I'm not looking. I have peach colored carpet, so sometimes you can't see it. I used Simple Solution in my Little Green Clean Machine, and it seemed to work okay. Does anyone have any other cleaning suggestions?

Hi! I had that same problem - but here is a solution that worked for me: If your doggie keeps going back to the same spot maybe it still smells faintly to their keen noses. I used "Pet Odor Eliminator" by "Outright" a subsidiary of the Bramton Company in Dallas TX. Step 2 is to spray the perimeter of the rug and the spot with a spray caller "B'have! by the Farnam Pet Products Company in Phoenix. Reinforce staying off the rug by firmly saying OFF! when your doggie puts a paw on rug. It works real well. Dogs don't like the smell - it just smells a little like hot electrical wires to me, tho. It is not a strong odor. Thank God it doesn't smell like some antiseptic or bugspray...I got both these products from a Pet catalog - Master Animal Care - 800.346.0749 Good Luck to you! Ayway, it works. Hope it works for you!

If your babie is not going for 5 days a urinary tract infection may be what is wrong and that is what is causing the odd behavior of going where they are not supposed to go this has happened to me once before with Gracie after a trip to the beach she got the infection and started peeing where she never did before and after the vet checked her it was determined that the was probably uncomfortabel going where she was used to. I hope this helps it may at least be something to check !

My year old Bingo just started going on the carpet recently. She had accidents when she was a puppy, but that was expected. Just in the last few days she has started this behavior again. She also seems very lethargic and depressed. My husband and I just had a baby a five weeks ago though, and I'm thinking maybe this is the problem. She's trying to get some attention! Good luck with yours and if anyone has any advice for me what to do, please let me know. I give her as much attention as I can, but she doesn't get all of it anymore with the baby around.

Hi Everyone - Thanks for your suggestions. When I said that she didn't "go" for 5 days, I meant that she didn't go on the rug! She uses the doggie door all the time.We use Nature's Miracle, so there is no odor, but we still can't get the stains out. And we moved into a new house with wall to wall carpets a year ago. Kiwi is 9 or 10. We've had her for 7 years, after she found ny husband on the street. We had never met a Maltese before, but she has totally taken over our lives ever since. You all know how that goes.
