Annie's rash on belly
by Angel
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Hello, my little Annie has some kind of sores on her belly. They are light brown--almost orange--and are crusty. There is a small area of them. She has an appointment on Tuesday at the vet, but I thought I would ask here if any of you have ever had this type of problem with your babies and what it was? Thank You!
DISCUSSION:
Hi Angel--Cubbie has a teeny little spot on his belly too. It almost looks as if a little piece of skin was skinned off, but it has been there a while. It doesn't appear to be anything bad. Maybe Annie has an allergy or maybe it's nothing at all. Please let us know what the vet says.

Are the spots circular, with a red/orangy rim and lighter in the center? If so, could be ringworm (fungus). My poor Lily has been dealing w/ this now for several months. Take her to the vet and begin treatment immediately! If it's ringworm and it spreads, it becomes very difficult to treat all the breakouts...good luck!

Angel, it sounds like a staph infection. It's not too unusual for some dogs to get that, especially in the summer shen it's hot and humid. Inhaled allergies are usually the cause; that is, inhaled as in pollens from grasses, trees, weeds, etc. More than likely it's grass. They'll probably give her some Cephalexin (antibiotic) and some antihistimines to take long term. She may be sleepy for awhile fron the antihistamine, but her body will adjust in a couple of weeks. What you need to do now is scrub (not lightly bathe) the area with some antibacterial soap or medicated shampoo. Rinse well. She may have some pustules under her arms, too. I know this routine verrrrry well, since my golden gets it alot. Until you get to the vet, rub some neosporin on it......NEVER cortisone.....after you get the scabby stuff cleaned off. Keep an eye on her tummy very closely after she gets over this round of it (it will happen again, I promise!) and when you see one or two pustules, start right away with the neosporin. Then hopefully her immune system will kick in and you won't have to go thru the antibiotics. Incidentally, my golden hasn't had one in several months because I've built her immune system up by feeding her a natural dog food plus lots of fresh veggies that I've cooked for her. She used to have several during the warm months. Good luck.

"Clear" by Awareness is a parasite cleanse that will kill the fungus (which is a parasite). "Harmony" is an immune system booster which is a good daily supplement too. E-mail me if you want more info. I'm in the forum's list.

Sounds like an allergy to me. My mom's poodle was having a similar problem with his skin and when he was taken to his vet he was diagnosed as being allergic to Bermuda Grass. My mom put Benedryl ointment on it for about a week and he hasn't had a problem since. She is however, avoiding grassy areas as much as possible. Good luck...

Thanx to all that responded. I took Annie to the vet and he thinks it's from sweat. Strange as that may sound. I'm letting her hair grow out to full coat, and I wasn't sure if the hair on the belly should be trimmed--some say yes, some say no. I trimmed it and he gave me some cream and it's almost gone now. My house has AC but like he said--her hair is growing and she is just sweating a little more especially on her belly. So gone is the hair on the belly and she is just great now:) Take care everyone:-)
