ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Hi folks, been a while since I visited the page. Looks like it has taken on a new life, very nice work. Well the reason I am here is Powder has been acting very strange the last 3 days.It all started when he didn't make it outside to poop, we shrugged this off as a isolated instance as Powder was definitly embarressed about the whole thing. When we came home from work that night Powder was NOT his usual jumping, barking greeter that we have come to expect. Now he seems very lethargic and comes to us and hangs with us but NOT with his usual exurberance, in fact he even let me eat my dinner in peace last night(this really worries me.Now tonight we came home and he seems the same no jumping, no running around the house(we call it Laps for Craps). I guess the next step is the vets. It's really hard with my wife and my work schedule to do this, But nothing is more important to us than our Powder Boy. So any advice would be greatly appreciated at this point. Oh and the only thing that has been different in our lives is we went camping last weekend. I keep thinking he must have gotten bit by a tick or worse, but he was with us all the time and we bathed his dusty body back to snow white when we came home, and we saw NO evidence of any ticks on him. Well guys ,thanks in advance for the help you will give us. Your's Art & Powder
DISCUSSION:
Well I am definitely no expert, but maybe Powder has a blockage or is constipated. We had a cat that had a block urinary tract once and he acted very strange and depressed. I immediately knew something was up and rushed him to the vet. This saved his life. I would get Powder to the vet asap.

He may have eaten something you were not aware of. Or if there were other dogs' feces (infected) around and he sniffed it, he could possibly have picked up something. Is your vet open on Sat. a.m.'s? I definitely think a trip to him/her is in order. Soon! Keeping fingers crossed here.

I think a trip to the vet is definitely in order, any change in normal behavior & activity for a couple of days warrants looking into. Let us know how it goes.

Art & Powder UPDATE: Powder went to the vets today, they gave him a shot of antibiotics and said we needed to force him to drink water with some Naturalyte in it. This supposed to help with his vomiting ,which is quite often now. If we can get him to eat for 24 hours we can give him some oral antibiotics. Apparently the Xray machine was down so they couldn't check for a blockage. His condition is the same as of right now . I just got home from work and we got him to lick some ice with this Naturalyite in it. I keep thinking he must have got into some poison or something. Thanks for the responce. I will keep the page informed of any new developments. We just feel so helpless. take care Art

I agree on what the others have said. I would get him to the vet pronto! I think he may have picked something up camping. Try not to worry. Take care!

Hello! I am not trying to upset you but a friend of mine had a dog that got very ill just recently. As it turned out, the dog had eaten some "slug kill" put out in the yard to kill slugs in the grass. Just a thought. Hope things are better today! I always get just frantic when I don't know what the problem is. I do alot better when I know what I am dealing with. Sorry to hear that your baby is having troubles. Jeannie

Well things have taken a NASTY turn for Powder. After posting my update message he was being attended every minute by my wife and I and finally after him throwing up for the 6th time we decided to take him to the emergency animal hospital in our town. He is presently being treated for pancreitis or a similar illness, his blood test won't be in till tommorrow. So now we are spending our second night with him absent. We visited him twice today and the first time he seemed a little more active, but tonight on our way home we went to see him again and he was kinda back to the sick puppy he is. It seems he is a little jaundice , but the doc said his spirits seemed good for a dog as sick as he is. Apparently there is no real reason they can give us for his condition at this time. I will get back to the discussion when I find out more tommorrow. The emergency hospital is only open when the regular vets are not, so I have to get him 7:00 tommorrow and take him back to his regular doc.Well I cant even think about him NOT being a part of our lives so I am sure he will pull through. So for now all prayers will be appreciated. Art

Art, This sounds really familiar, Misha became really sick, like Powder she was vomiting frequently, she couldn't even keep water down. She was then hospitalized, she was on I.V. and everything. It finally got so bad that the vet operated late one night and discovered it was an intestinal problem, her small intestine telescoped into her large one and nothing could pass through. I think it was called an "intasupption" (I'm sure I spelled it wrong) maybe you could bring this up to your vet because it sounds very familiar. After 8 days in intesive care and $1,300 Misha was home and has been fine ever since(over 1 year now). No price was too big as far as I was concerned. I know just how you feel, I hope this helps and I pray that little Powder is home soon... Please keep us posted...

I assumed that your vet. x-rayed the abdomen to check for an intestinal blockage. There is a very famous brand of dog food that can cause blockages in toy dogs. You may e-mail me for the name. I had it happen to my 4 pounder years ago but caught it quick as I had heard of the problem - just didn't believe it. Dobies sometimes swallow balls ect and can die from the results. Hope your Maltese is better by the time you get this.
