Dogs at work
by Opal, Lalita, & Veba
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Just wondering if anyone's job let's them take there dogs to work. I work at a University in Researh...and I suggested that we all bring our dogs in to work. Everyone in my department has at least one dog. We have scheduled our dog day for next thursday...We'll have them visit where mommy/daddy works, pretend to do work [ggg] and were going to have a doggie talent show. I'm makeing Lalita a new outfit made for the occasion. Yep, we are definitely going to get a lot of work done that day...Ha! Ha! Well we are doing research...seeing how well our babies interact with each other, bringing awareness to those who haven't yet discovered the joy of being owned by our 'angels'...

DISCUSSION:

Dear Opal - what a fun idea!!! Doggie-Day! I teach art at a college and often I bring Otto with. I always bring him to Orientation (he is a perfect therapy dog for nervous new students). He loves all the attention and is sooo sweet and good - people actually beg me to bring him in! Ha! What fun!

I'm very since I work for a family owned business and pretty much bring my baby to work anytime I want. The problem here is that it is pretty dirty and she just turns into a little grease ball so I only bring her in just before bath time. We have a great time and she uses her papers here just like at home. Never a problem. All the employees think she is just a doll.

Oh, Opal, how I envy you. I used to work in Research at a University also, couldn't take Truffles to work, dogs not allowed, even tho they had plenty of mice and rats!! Now I work in a Cancer Center and have tried numerous times to convince higher ups that bringing Truffles to work to see the little children cancer patients would bring such joy to them...still no dice. I know you all will have loads of fun, wish I could be doing the same.

Hi Opal, I teach at a university and since we have private offices, I am allowed to bring my Toby to work. This is the first place where I have worked that this has been allowed. Smart employers will encourage this policy, if there is an appropriate place for the doggies to be during the day. I know that I am more relaxed, take shorter lunch breaks (don't have to go home to check on my furbaby) and am getting in better shape every day because I walk my little sweetie across campus for my errands now, where before I would dash across campus in my car. All of these things are positive effects for me and my employer. There have been several "work dogs" through the years I have been there. The students love this policy, often asking the professor for permission to take the dog on a short walk or ask to see and play with the dog. I personally will not let Toby go out of the building with a student, but I would take a walk with the student, thus getting exercise AND building a relationship. Every day Toby goes with me to work is a great day! Can't wait to hear about your day at work with your furbaby! Have fun and write about your get together.

Opal: What a great idea. All the people that I work with that have dogs would love this idea. We talk about our dogs all the time and have pictures in our office. This one lady comes to my office every morning and tells me her Max (her new little daschund) stories and she always wants an update on my boys. I live close to the office and slip my babies in every chance I get (that reminds me my boss man is out this week). Opal you must work at a really great place. I think I will put your post in our suggestion box.

Opal I used to be able to take my dog to work with me, I managed a small office and kept his pen beside my desk - thought it would protect him from the kids that sometimes visited with their parents. Well, the problem I had was not the kids but the adults! I had a tiny little Yorkie and these big people would simply reach in and pick him up any which way, give him "treats" and one man actually was sitting on the outside of the pen poking at my dog! We decided that he was better at home, though to be honest most of our clients thought he was wonderful and missed him being there - for his saftey and my sanity I had to leave him at home.

You are so lucky to be able to do this! I work at the Health Department and could never pull this off. Although for Halloween I dressed up as Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz and brought Comet in a basket for all my co-workers to see and then sent Comet home with his daddy and replaced the real dog with a stuffed dog. Someone from the Food bank called to ask where the dog was. My co-worker sensing trouble, said "there's no dog here" When she found this was a friendly person, "O THAT dog, he went home with his dad". My co-workers are still talking about that day!

Opal: Boy, are you lucky. I work for a bank that has problems with the concept of "dress-down Friday" much less canines at work. However, I have secretly been thinking about a national "Take Our Dogs to Work Day". Why should daughters be the only ones having so much fun? ... besides, I don't even have a daughter. So ... any comments?

Opal, I take Brandy (4 months old) to work as well. I am an Engineer and I sit in front of my computer all day. She sits on her matt under my desk. My boss doesn't like dogs but he still lets me bring her to work. He thinks she is very well behaved and cute. Just across the road from my work there is this big park which Brandy loves.

What a great thing to be able to do!! I have brought one of my 5 Maltese to work. I had a co-worker tell me how she so afraid of animals. I told her I had a two prounder that was 14 years old that everyone from 1 years to 90 years fell in love with. And sure enough she did, along with everyone else in the office! But needless to say , this was a special arrangement. I would love to be able to do this once a quarter! People here bring their real kids in so I should be albe to bring my "children" in! Right!

I took Rastus into Uni with me when he was really sick (the week before he went to Rainbow Bridge). I had him in this huge cane washing basket, he didn't have the strength to get out of it. I just couldn't bear to leave him at home when I knew he needed me. I couldn't take the Beasties in....they would get too excited and bark at everyone!
