vaccination side effects?
by Julie
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
I would first like to thank all of you for your kind words and prayers regarding kiki. it has really meant a lot to me and my family. my sis is looking into getting another maltese, and we are really worried about the new dog getting parvo as we are *pretty sure* kiki got the parvo from his vaccination. he had a terrible reaction to the vaccination that he had never had before so i think it may have been too large a dose or that his initial vaccinations were the killed virus and this past time the live one.so to double check, i was wondering, for all of you that have maltese, if you remember, what kind of side effects did your doggies have to their vaccinations? and did you have the live or dead virus administered? thanks for any help.

DISCUSSION:

I don't know Julie if he got the dead or live virus vaccination. It only says puppy booster. Alex didn't had a bad reaction at all. What did your vet say ? Do you trust him ?
Janine

I think the most important thing is finding a veterinarian that you trust, and let him administer the shots at the appropriate times.

There are studies on the parvo modified live vs the killed vaccine. However, almost all the manufactures make the modified live vaccine - only one still makes the killed version and it is hard to get. So, if Kiki received the parvo with other shots (in one vaccine) odds are he got the modified live. That is NOT to say at all that that had any ill effect on him. I could not venture to say...sometimes people opt for postmortems to determine the exact cause of death. I know there are a lot of unanswered questions you are dealing with. I hope your vet can help you get some answers. Once again, my condolences.

Julie, did the vet include lepto in that shot? A lot of times our little ones have very bad reactions to this vaccine including death. One of my girls went into a coma when the vet decided to give her lepto against my wishes.....I guess he thought he knew more about my dogs than I did. Consequently he is no longer my vet.
