Maltese to Beach?
by Kenny Jarels
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
I will be going to the beach in a couple of weeks and would like to take my Maltese, is this ok to do?? I hear the beach is bad for dogs because of sand fleas, is this true??

DISCUSSION:

Kenny, that is true. Sand fleas are so tiny and it is very hard to get rid of them. Especially if your Maltese has long hair. As much as I hate leaving the girls behind when we go to the beach, I think they are better of staying home with a sitter. Have a great day.

Kenny, I don't know where your going to the beach, but here in Fl. it's toooo hot, would never take Tasha to the beach in this summer heat. I didn't know sand fleas got on dogs.

If you do take your malt to the beach, make sure you rinse the feet very well afterwards. The sand can get between the toes and become an irritant. By the way, Anne has mentioned often about taking her dogs to the beach with no problem.

I take mine to the beach all the time. In fact, I live on the beach with my husband and three dogs. The main thing to be concerned about is not letting them get sunburned. So, early morning or late afternoon....6 to 9 a.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. And do clean them up really well afterwards to get the sand out. We have very fine white sand here and it sticks to the dogs more than the coarser sands from other beaches. I don't have a problem with sand fleas, but then I use Advantage, etc. They really can get sunburned VERY easily since they only have on layer of hair. Have fun and use common sense. AND PLEASE, please, please....PICK UP THE POOP!!!

I take my boy to the beach all the time and he absolutely loves it! I have never had a problem - just make sure you have plenty of water and shade during the middle of the day.

If you have any idea of growing a good coat on your Maltese do not take her anywhere near salt water. I made that mistake many years ago and though I gave her a good bath immediately after her beach trip I had ruined the texture of her beautiful hair. I tdoes take many months for the new hair to grow out. If she is cut short then she may enjoy chasing seagulls as mine did and don't worry about the coat. Sand fleas are not regular fleas, just called that because at some times of the year they just jump on you and are near invisible. This is usually at night.
