Help for Slipped Disc?
by JJ
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
I hope that someone can help! My six-year-old male maltese is believed to have a slipped disc in his lower back. I say "believed to have" because his vet diagnosed it as such based on my report of Warrior's symptoms and his own observations - no formal medical testing or evaluation. He endures episodes of severe pain, which baby aspirin helps to control. During these episodes, I must carry him EVERYWHERE, and he winces and cries out at the slightest abrupt movement. Is anyone else in this situation? Any thoughts or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

DISCUSSION:

JJ, I've heard about chiropractic care for animals. Supposed to work miracles. If it works for us humans it makes sense that it works for our dogs. I'm sorry that I don't know where these people are though. Do you have any "alternative health" centers near you? They may be able to point you in the right direction. If you don't have a large center like that, try a local health foods store. Good luck. Back problems are so painful. Poor baby.

Find a chiropractor, fast! There are many who can work on dogs, altho they may not advertise the fact. Your poor fur baby can get instant relief, and without drugs. If you were here, Popcorn's daddy would fix him up . I don't suppose you are in So. California?

JJ, first of all, it sounds to me like you need at least a second opinion. Shouldn't they take xrays or something? Hope the meds continue to help Warrior when he has these episodes. Lulu will occasionally act like one of her back legs is bothering her -- tests found nothing. What's funny is that it seems to jump from left leg to right leg, etc. It happens very rarely, too. Good luck with Warrior -- give him kisses from Lulu and Jack Frost!

Definitely GET x-rays and a second opinion. If indeed he has a slipped disc and not some other problem - then I suggest chiropractic help for your Warrior or maybe look into Acupuncture/Acupressure for your pet. I haven't done this before but I saw a tv show on this once (yes, it's for real) and all the people who brought their various pets in said it was doing wonders for their pet. If you believe in alternative medicine (in particular Eastern therapy - i do) then look into this. I have no names to offer, but i'm sure you can do a search on the net and find something available. Good luck - i hate to think that your Warrior could be receiving relief when he's in so much pain.
