liver problem - meal suggestions?
by Annie (fron England)
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
I am the owner of a beautiful 14 year old Maltese called Cassie. Unfortunately, she has a very bad liver problem and I have been told to feed her on good protein plus pasta or rice. However, she hates the rice and pasta and throws it all over the kitchen floor - does anyone have any suggestions for other meals? Must be no salt diet.

DISCUSSION:

How about some cottage cheese or yogurt?

Maybe the rice and pasta is tasteless. Mild doesn't have to be bland. Try sauteeing a bit of chicken with a small amount of garlic and onions in a dab of olive oil, and then throw in the rice right into the pan and stir around to get the flavoring into that too. See if that makes a difference. (Chop up some colorful veggies and throw small pieces in too!)

Annie, try pearl barley; it seems to take on the flavor of the meat it's cooked with, and also add a little fresh garlic for flavoring. Most dogs can't resist the flavor. Good luck.

My maltese has had reason to be on a bland diet in the past, and he also HATES rice and pasta. I would find a pile of it on the floor next to his dish!! A simple trick seemed to work: Try mixing it with the meat baby foods. I think Warrior would eat ANYTHING as long as it was mixed with baby food meat!! Good luck!

Annie, check the recipe page....go to the main MalteseOnly page and scroll down the menu on the left hand side until you find "Recipes for your Maltese"...click on that and there are lots of recipes there. I posted 2 microwave ones (one with pasta and one with brown rice and pearled barley). I've since amended the pasta one after advice from a dog nutritionist and intend to post the amended recipe soon.

Thank you everyone who sent in recipe suggestions for Cassie. She's now eating like a pig and no mess on the kitchen floor. Yoghurt is a special favourite!
