Regressive Potty Behavior
by Sandy (Shelby & Nikki)
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
We just returned from a week's vacation. My two girls stayed at the breeders where I got Shelby from. There are a lot of malties there and I think it's a bit like camp for the girls! They really love the breeder (I can tell by the way they run to her when I bring them there). Anyway, the problem is, now that they're back, they're pottying all over the house!! I don't know if they're angry at us for leaving them or if they got used to it over there (there are papers all over for them to go on plus some do go on the floor - although it's cleaned up quickly). Any suggestions on how to get them back on track again? Thanks!

DISCUSSION:

Hi, I would say to start from day one of their training, could be they are just angry for being left, {these little doggies do have a mind of their own!} Good luck.

I left Darby with a friend who just loves him and spoils him rotten. It was just a weekend, but now he is doing the same thing. Little poopers everywhere!!! Driving me nuts! I hate to lock him up in the crate again as he is in there whenever we aren't home. What gets into their heads?

His potty schedule and toilet habits were different and he got mixed up. Just start over. He'll quickly remember what he's supposed to do. Consider making other arrangements next time you leave. It's still better than taking him to a clinic. They just don't let them out often enough and often they have to go in their cage. That is not good.

I would start over from scratch with the girls. They are probably mad and confused. They'll bounce back to their normal routine quickly. I don't know if you crate trained them or put up a baby gate, but go back to your original method and things will return to normal. Good Luck!

Start all over as if they're were puppies. Good luck!!

Thanks for the replies! I think they're getting back to their normal habits now. Shelby is going on the wee wee pad again and Nikki is still having a few accidents but is going back to standing by the door to let us know.

Sandy, I have almost a reverse situation. After having a successful experience training both Angel and Mikee to litter pans...she began regressing and almost always tinkles on the litter pan paper...but has started pooping on the kitchen floor just wherever the mood strikes her.

After a two-day trip where they were both confined to a small bathroom...she tinkled and pooped on the litter pan 100% of the time. When we returned home, she's back to pooping on the kitchen floor. Everything I read says "DO NOT YELL OR SCREAM WHEN THEY'VE POOPED ON THE FLOOR..." so....I just clean it up and hope to catch her in the act where I scoop her up and place her on the litter paper. Mikee (a male dog for crying out loud!) ALWAYS goes on the litter pan. However, he is one year old now and "marks" various places in the kitchen on the floor. I haven't caught him marking on the carpet or furniture yet...guess I'll have to put him in Depends if that happens. Good luck...I don't have the answer to anything!
