Do Wee Pads work for boy
by Shirley
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
I have a friend that just got her first maltese. I told her about Sara being potty trained to a Wee-Wee Pad but since I have never had a male maltese, I didn't know if they worked for them. Do they lift their leg to high, etc. Male maltese owners, please give advice. Thanks

DISCUSSION:

Some male Maltese never learn to lift their leg, if they're neutered early enough. Because Gizmo started lifting his leg at 5 months old (before he was neutered), he likes to have something to aim at - absolutely won't use paper or pads unless the paper is propped up so that can hit it (which I did for a month or so while it was raining so hard here last winter). He now insists on going outside and doesn't mind the rain at all, and he can "hold it" for a long time. Niki, my female, prefers to use the paper - I think because she's always gotten a Cheerio or two for going on the paper. Also, she doesn't have Gizmo's ability to wait - when she has to go, it's NOW!!

My little boy, Lucca, is just over a year. He lifts his leg and this caused a problem with the wee-wee pads for a while. By using a Puppy John and keeping it a few inches away from any wall, door, etc., I don't have any more problems with him over-shooting his mark (so to speak ...)

Our little guy learned to use a wee wee pad well before he was neutered. Even though he was neutered very young he does lift his leg but the pad is large enough that it's not a problem.

My male, Vinny is 3 yrs old and never lifted his leg and only goes on wee wee pads. No problem at all.

Comet, a male uses the wee wee pads before and after his neutering. He lifts his leg.

I have an antique crock jug that isn't particularly attractive. I set it about 1/3 of the way down the pad and our boys use it for their "fire hydrant". I like keeping their pad in the corner of the bathroom and this way they don't hit baseboard or miss the pad.

Hi, Shirley, Touquet has no concept of "aiming" at something when he tinkles. He is 3 years old, and was paper-trained as a puppy. He was neutered at 8 months. Most of the time, he still squats. Occasionally he lifts his leg, but doesn't turn his body. He doesn't ever miss the paper. He has no clue what a fire hydrant is for .

Barbara, You don't know how lucky you are. Arthur lifts his leg so high he would put a gymnast to shame. He's been in a p----g contest with an Australian Shepherd for years. He really thinks if he can get the right angle he can hit higher on the trees. Old Frankie Blue-eyes got impatient with him once and stood over him and cut loose. LOL.

Hi!My male maltese does lift his leg, however my wee wee pads are large enough (and far enough away from the wall)so they are not a problem for us.As long as your friend keeps the pad away from walls, etc. he should be able to tickle on the pad just fine.

Noah has always used the wee-wee pads and lifts his leg but aims in such a way that he never misses the pad. He is very clean. Wee wee pads are the best!

Dottie, I can't stop laughing . Your images are soooo funny! Give the gymnast a kiss for me.

Shirley, both my boys use the puppy john. Baxter lifts his leg about an inch off the floor, but that doesn't change the direction of the stream. Rudy still squats. Tricia, that's interesting about propping the papers up. I almost adopted a three-year-old show dog that was not housetrained and the breeder said to paper train him, fill a plastic soda bottle with water and place it in the middle of the papers or wee-wee pad. It gives them something to shoot for.

Marley shreds wee wee pads even though I tried to train him with them at an early age -- I guess all our babies are different. He's one and still squats too!

Hello everyone! I've missed you...have been on "life" missions and not been able to chat lately. I have a talent for answering the messages that are about to run out of time...but couldn't pass up this subject! My little Mikee! When he was 11 months and two weeks old decided to hike/lift his little leg! He was so proud...but not nearly so proud as I was because his hair had grown so long underneath his tummy that when he "went" while he squatted, it sprayed all his hair yellow and the hair got sticky by the end of the week. I think it's a hoot about the fire hydrant objects! Little Angel sometimes lifts her leg, but usually just sits and puddles and soaks up the puddle! I have them both trained to the litter pans and have never taken them outside. No mud, no fleas, no ticks. Downside is on a recent trip, since they NEVER have to tell me when they need to go....they didn't know how to tell me and I just had to time their next potty time. Gotta go...am at work!
