Puppy and Adult Food?
by eva
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Hi everyone, I just wanted to update everyone I have chatted with that we got our yorkie puppy Sukoshi a week ago. He has adjusted real well. Peanut and Sukoshi were exhausted from all the playing and running around and both of them finally, after two days of playing all day long, have realised that they can take a nap during the day and get up in an hour and start all over again. I was worried at first because Sukoshi being a terrier is more aggressive of the two and I thought they would get into a squabble if the play became too rough but so far if it becomes rough Peanut becomes the aggressor and puts Sukoshi in his place by using his I've had enough bark. Sukoshi then starts licking Peanut's nose and when he gets Peanut to lick him back they are friends again. The problem I'm having is that since one of them is a puppy I need to feed them two different types of dry dog food which is appropriate for their age. When I put their food dishes down, Sukoshi goes to Peanut's dish and eats and Peanut goes to Sukoshi's dish and eats. I have tried switching food putting Peanut's in Sukoshi's dish and visa versa; they just switch, mixing both foods; they just pick out what they want while eating out of the same bowl, and feeding them one at a time; then they refuse to eat what I put down until they can eat at the same time. Should I be concerned about them not getting enough nutrition since they are eating each others food instead of their own?

DISCUSSION:

Eva, I had the same problem when I got Amber. Munchkin was already 5 at that time. Only way I solved the problem of eating each others food was to feed them at different times and stay close. Now Amber is almost two. They still compute for each others food. Hope this helps. Have a great day!

Oh boy Eva, do I have a story to share! I have Cubbie as you know. We also have a tabby cat named BJ. We got BJ when he was 6-8 weeks old, so he was verrrry tiny. As soon as BJ was old enough to graduate to regular kitty food, we started putting his dish near Cubbie's feeding area. Of course Cubbie decided he liked the kitty food better and the BJ enjoyed Cubbie's food so much more. Arrgghh! I managed to train them to eat their own food. Most of the time Cubbie eats his doggie food and most of the time BJ eats his kitty food. As for playtime, when Cubbie has had enough of that meanie kitty, he does the same thing Peanut does...bark that "I've had enough of you Mister pussycat" bark! He can hold his own against BJ (who is declawed) and sometimes, BJ is the recipient of aggressive play! I have to laugh when that happens. BJ is twice as big as Cubbie!

Eva....dont know if this will help as i dont have 2 pups but how about mixing the 2 foods in one dish.....more puppy food than adult! That way youll know that the yorkie is getting what it needs for nutrition......Just a suggestion.......By the way.....CONGRADULATIONS :)

Well, I think you need to feed them separately. Sounds like a good time to arrange for some one on one with your dogs, play with one while the other is eating & vice versa. Puppy food contains more fat than adult food and higher concentrates of some vitamins than an adult needs - and adult food is not enough for a puppy. The best thing would be for them to get the proper food for their age, with balanced nitrients that the pup need for growth and the adult needs for maintenance.

Hi Eva! I have the same problem. I have a 3 year old, Bianca, a 1 and a half year old, BriAnna, and an 8 month old, Annie. I have only fed puppy food to them all since I have had them. When Annie turns 1 at the end of October, I will gradually make the transition to adult food. I couldn't deal with this one eating this ones food and this one eating this ones, etc..., plus I have the time to cook for them. If I didn't have the time, I don't know what I would have done to handle this. My vet is aware of this and says it is fine. But--I do not use the dry puppy food as their only source of nutrition. They each only eat about one fourth of a cup of the dry pup food per day. I cook lunch and dinner for them. So I know they are each getting the nutrition they need to meet their needs. Maybe try some of the recipes listed on this site. They love them and I know they are eating very well. Good Luck!
