DISCUSSION:

She may have a slipped ligament - my brother's maltese (moma) had this problem recently. She tends to jump up and down reeeeally high whenever she gets excited (ie when she first sees you walk in the house) - when it slipped - she wouldn't walk on it. It didn't seem to cause her pain - but obviously discomfort. My brother took her to the vet and the vet said that if it kept reoccuring - surgery was the answer, but he said to wait it out and sometimes it goes away on its own. However, my brother was on the alert to watch her and when these episodes happen, he has to carefully massage the ligament back into place. Moma has recovered and the problem disappeared as quickly as it started. Another thing, they try to keep her from jumping so high. It's like she's jumping on those old Toyota commercials "oh what a feeling" and people jump in the air unrealistically high.

I went/am going through the same concern myself. Sunday night, Chico was fine, but on Monday morning, after my shower, I noticed Chico was limping. However, we would walk on his foot, but gingerly. And when he would sit, he'd lift his front paw up to take the weight off it. I was at the vet yesterday, and he said it was just a sprain, probably from jumping off the bed or the sofa. He just gave him a needle (anti-imflammatory) and told me to rest him as much as possible. I took away his ball that he usually plays with, chasing it around for hours a day. For two days he just wasn't the same. Normally full of energy, running around like mad, he just lay beside me and looked pitiful. However, this morning, (Wed.) he seems to be coming around. I haven't noticed any limping yet today. Hope he's on the road to recovery. And I hope your little one will get well soon too!!!

Hi, my name is Gail. We have 2 Maltese darlings, and our little boy Cody also has a little ball he chases for HOURS ever night. Well, all the sudden he came limping back, his rear leg up. The vet says he has detatched knee caps, and that is common in small dogs. She gave meRIMADYL the new medication for arthritus, and it has been a great help so far, it is an anti-inflammatory medication also. He wouldn't eve touch his ball, which is the other half of him around here. We think he must connect it to pain. It's so sad!! The vet said surgery can cause other problems to developed, like arthritus,so we hope it doesn't come down to that! Hope you little Shadow is well real soo. gail Z

Linda, we just got back from the vets today on Sunday and all the posts and yours are so familiar of what I heard today. Little Comet has subluxating patellas on both rear legs. He limps and has been soo-o quiet, yet when I examined his legs I found no thorns or stings and no crying in pain. The surgery thing for Comet is not an emergency but a consideration and like the other post indicated, the surgery can cause other problems. Because Comet is so small, only 3# 10 oz today and he's about 20 months of age, he will need an orthopedic surgeon. I need to evaluate the situation and see how he does on 1/2 baby aspirin daily for a week. He is so quiet, too quiet. I hope he feels better soon, so I can feel better, too! Take care.

Poor little Comet.....Halan please give him a hug from me and some concerned licks and snuffles from the Beasties. We hope he's feeling much better very soon. Keep us posted on how he does with the aspirin.

Halen, I'm so sorry about poor Comet .I hope the baby asp. works .I know exactly how you feel, our fur babies are so close to human it's like when your kid's were sick when they were babies ,you want to take their pain away ,hopefully the asp. will work and your fur baby will be back to normal soon. I wouldn't rush into the surgery too soon (I'm a retired R.N. and have seen lots of knife happy surgerons ,don't know if some vets are the same, hope not.) Shadow sends wags and kisses to Comet .

Linda, I'm also an RN and used to work for an orthopedic surgeon, so I know what they do on humans. Comet remains very quiet today and is still limping, but the ASA does seems to relieve the pain. Even our son came over to check on the little guy and my husband tenderly carries him all over the house. Thanks for all your care. I'll keep you posted. Halen
