Is our Maltese a dog?
by Cotch
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Herbie is his name. He is three years old and we sometimes wonder whether he is a dog or perhaps a reincarnation awaiting to become human in his next life!!Why??? He doesn't bark! (ever - even at other dogs)He loves black pepper pate and pistachio nuts are his specialty! But his GOD is - Vegemite on Toast!!!! Don't understand? Well I guess you would have to be Australian to understand this delicacy. Is he dog? Is he part human? The mind boggles!!!
DISCUSSION:
Herbie sounds funny. My brother's maltese (MOMA is her name) loooooove vegetables - she'll take broccolli over beef anyday. The crunchier the veggie - the more likely she'll love it. She doesn't care for the softer vegetables - ie. leafy greens - she will prefer the stalk portion over the leafy portion.
We always thought it was hilarious - not to say she doesn't eat meat or her share of meaty treats - but veggies come first for her any day.
BARBARA: I disagree with your husband about Maltese walking upright. They won't be able to....they'll have curvature of the spine so bad from being carried like babies!!
This site is crazy...I love it!!

Cotch, The answer to your question is Yes, definately; I think these Malts are a reincarnation waiting to be human. When I talk to my 11 month old Buster he knows exactly what I am talking about. These furbabies are very smart and definately know how to get their way with us humans. They have us wrapped around their little fingers...

HI,It's funny hey? I am also Australian vegemite is a big hit with my little girl. Her name is Milly and she turns one on July 9! Milly also has the taste for champagne(she put her head in the glass and took a lick!) And fine cheeses and pate! She decided the night I bought her home that if I were to have yummy meals that she would too and so when it comes to dog food I practically have to force it down her throat!
Well toodles,

Cotch, the Beasties also love vegemite on toast! I always give them the corners off mine. My friends who didn't grow up in Australia can't understand how we can eat the stuff, much less love it - it's definitely something you have to be introduced to as a child (or a maltese!)

Hebie, I absolutely love a little vegemite on toast (my mum hates it but she keeps a tiny jar in the pantry just for a treat now and then. But I'm really into Morning Coffee biscuits, but again, my mum is very strict on how many I can eat. My speciality is BBQ fish! I thought I was human.
Bailee
I think all these Maltese babies are human! They lead us to believe this anyway.

Hi, I have Brandy. She is 14 weeks old and we got her 3 weeks ago. My husband is already got her eating vegemite on toast. She loves it!! I think it is really funny. She also likes croissants. BTW I live in Sydney, Australia.
Gabriela
Okay, Aussies, you have to share with us on the other side of the world... What is vegemite?
Marie
From what I have seen of Aurora, read about how maltese are treated on this sight, and seen how people act. My best guest is that if we are real good as humans, when we die, we get to move up to maltese when we come back to earth.

Marie - I'm American but I do know basically what vegemite looks like, etc. How do I know this? Because one day my fiance and I were listening to the radio and the song "Down Under" came on (it mentions vegemite). So Brian decided to look up vegemite on the Internet, and guess what? It has a website! I don't remember the address but use a search engine for the word vegemite and you should find it. Anyway, it's black and looks like tar, but hey, different strokes... My favorite breakfast is ice-cream sandwiches made out of waffles, so who am I to judge? :-)
Judy
Marie, I'm shocked!! A vegemite sandwich is to us what a peanut butter and jelly sandwich is to you guys, although personally I only like vegemite on toast......in fact when I was a first- grader I used to take cold toast-and-vegemite for lunch (you think I'm kidding, don't you?). If you've heard of Marmite or Promite you're on the right track. It's a concentrated yeast extract, a black salty spread with the consistency of margarine. I bet if you tried it you'd probably want to spit it out......most people who weren't weaned on it have that reaction......but I just can't get enough of it (nor can the Beasties)! Yummy!

My little Maya used to love poached eggs on toast, with a little coffee for breakfast. She enjoyed chicken parmisian and spaghetti at our favorite outdoor cafe. She would KILL for cappucino. Literally go crazy if it was anywhere in her vicinity and it wasn't offered to her. After a good cup of cappucino she would be so CONTENT! Very funny. She enjoyed salad with dinner. And had all kinds of cultivated gourmet tastes. Not to mention her cultural proclivities. She enjoyed a classical concert, or a good movie too. Always quiet and attentive. I miss her so much. I believe that most animals have far greater spiritual gifts than humans give them credit for. If we pay attention, we can learn a lot from them. I am looking forward to my first Maltese, Ahzsa, and learning all the wonderful-breed things I've heard about here!
Isabel
Hi,vegemite is like um, do you know Marmite or Promite? Well it is kinda like those!
Lauren & Milly
I'm starting to wonder the same thing about my fur-baby. Dusty is on a diet because of his allergies. He eats chicken or lamb with steamed veggies. Last night, he decided he no longer liked this dish and has went on a hunger strike! I do vary what he eats so that he won't burn out, but since I've been cooking for him, he hasn't been picky at all. Oh well! By the way, his favorite treat is liver-pate on toast. He also loves risoto & lasagne! His daddy used to be a professional chef, so sometimes Dusty & I both get spoiled!! I know my Dust had to have been Royalty in his past life!!!!! Isn't it wonderful to have one of these cuties around???

Hi, Cotch, My husband says he figures it will only be a couple of generations before Maltese start walking completely upright! As for vegamite, we are going to have to wait until we take our dream trip to Australia. Touquet does, however, have a taste for Dulse (seaweed from the Canadian east coast).
Barbara & Touquet
This is Cotch again. On line from Melbourne, Australia. The reply's have been so funny to read. Herbie is busy snoozing next to the fire. He has decided to include brie cheese into his diet by waiting till I took a shower and when I got out, only the wrapping was left inconspicously under the coffee table that it was on. I agree we may just incarnate to Maltese when we die.
PS: Vegemite is great in gravy for roasts or on raisin toast with cheese!!! You just GOT to try it. I love it sooo much (like human like dog) I wrote a song called 'Vegemite On Toast" - I'm serious!!! love - Cotch.
Cotch
Ok, now I know what vegemite is Deanna. It sounds gross. I can't believe you actually eat that stuff. I can see the Beasties eating it, but you? I can't think of anything in America to compare that to. Cubbie loves "normal" stuff, ha ha! Cheese is his favorite treat or "chaze" as you dear Aussies would say! I think I will keep my peanut butter and jelly sandwiches!
And Cotch, I can't believe you wrote a song about vegemite on toast! I can't think of anything to top that one!
Felicia & Cubbie
Cotch--I would love to hear this song of yours! I'm certain that everyone else would as well!! Too funny.

COTCH: I tried vegemite several years ago while in Christchurch, New Zealand. I disliked it so much that when I got to Sydney, I knew to stay away from it. I'll have to say, though, that I did love the food in Australia. We stayed in the King's Cross area and that was neat.
