Could It Be A Bee?
by Liz C
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Please help! Rocky is a two year old male. My husband and I went out today for a few hours and left Rocky home. We never put him in a crate or confine him to any part of the house since he is well behaved. When we got home, Rocky did not come to greet us at the door as he usually does and right away we knew something was wrong. My husband saw a bee squirming around on the kitchen floor. Of course, we assumed it stung him and thought that was what was bothering him. Rocky was quivering all over and shaking his head. When he began wheezing, that's when we decided to call the vet. The vet called us immediately after being paged (It's Sunday, Father's Day) and told us to go in. After examining Rocky, he found no particular sting but said that it could be an allergic reaction and that his abdomen felt extremely tense. (Just before going to the Vet, he had a normal bowel movement) He gave him a shot of cortizone and a shot of antihistamine. Poor thing! A few hours have passed and he's still a little disoriented. The doctor said this might happen. I'm hoping that it's not more serious. I'm still not 100% sure that a bee sting is behind this. I'm really worried, well, actually, I'm in tears. I don't know if he's in pain and I'm praying that this will all go away by morning. I love him so much; you guys understand. Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks.
DISCUSSION:
Liz, Maybe the vet couldn't see a sting on Rocky and yet there is one? Another thought is that he could be afraid of it. Taffy had a tangle with a bee and it wound up that she was not stung, but she is terrified of any buzzing now. She gets afraid of things really easy, and when she does she will shake and act like something is very wrong. I understand your fear of something being wrong with Rocky, but give him a little time and try to be calm, they seem to pick up on our moods and fears too. I know you will call the vet again of Rocky still seems to be acting funny. Let us know how it goes!

Liz, this may sound silly but did you take the bee to the vet so he could see if it was missing its sting? The reason I ask is because bees are supposed to die once they use their sting, although I'm not sure how long after, and it sounds like it was still alive when you found it. (I was wondering if there could have been 2 bees and if Rocky ate one - that might explain his tender abdomen in the absence of something external. If it was a bee-sting then the antihistamine should fix him up, I'm allergic to bees and they work great for me, but they do make you feel disoriented. I'm sure Rocky will be fine and he's probably not in any pain. My Dad kept bees, and when I was a baby our pet cockatoo got stung by a whole swarm of bees - my Dad smeared him all over with honey (no joke - he read somewhere that this would help) and he recovered with no problems.

Liz, I have had some pretty close calls finding Buster with a Wasp on the kitchen floor a few times but luckily so far so good. Hope Rocky is better soon...keep us posted

Sounds like an allergic reaction to me. You might want to talk to the vet and get some more antidote in case this happens again. Not to freak you out but if the pup is allergic, sometimes the reaction is stronger if it happens again.

Lucy was stung by a bee on Easter. When we called the Vet's office, they just told us to watch for swelling. Well Lucy never swelled, but about an hour later she started to have runny bloody stools. Off the the emergency we went. I had actually pulled the stinger out of her nose so I knew she had been stung. The emergency Vet was not to concerned because there wasn't any swelling but did give her the shots as a precaution. She was off until the next morning and was back to her perky self by the afternoon except for the runny poohs for the next 2 days. What a tramatic experience. I can certainly understand how your feeling. If it was the bee sting, your baby should be doing much better today. If not, I would certainly go back to the Vet and have him take another look.
