Diarrhea...??help!!
by Wendy
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
I talked to some of you on here a while back and I got my doggy! Sophie---she was bouncy and happy the past week or so and bouncy this morning. I fed her some Pedigree puppy canned (just a spoonful or two) sprinkled with some IAMS dry puppy food. She LOVES the Iams dry. Now this afternoon, she got runny diarrhea and has lain around all afternoon, sleeping and looking tired and pathetic. I am SO afraid. Does anyone know if it is normal for her to sleep SO much?? Everyone tells me that puppies sleep a WHOLE lot but my puppies as a child were "mutt" puppies and I don't remember them sleeping so much-- Sophie sleeps 2 or 3 hours at a time...plays for 5 minutes--sometimes 20 and then she's sleeping again....I figured that the canned food I mixed with her regular food could be the source. She cannot eat IAMS canned puppy. It is too thin and makes her poop runny but she has no problems eating the PEDIGREE LITTLE CHAMPIONS. It is much chunkier and has noodles and stuff in it. The Pedigree puppy is a semi-solid chunk like IAMS though. Could this be what is causing her diarrhea? I am a very spastic mommy and worry about every little thing. I love my baby so much. She sleeps with me every night and cries for me like my own child. I ADORE her and want what is best for her but it is a Saturday and her vet is out of town until Monday. Please give me some advice...I am a little wary of just going to a new vet I don't know. Do your puppies sleep a lot? Is it possible that a lot of play can just wear a baby out...and does texture matter to a doggy's poop? Thanks!!
Worried Mommy,Wendy
DISCUSSION:
Wendy-she probably just has a tummy upset, but because she is
a baby, take her to the vet. They can give her something for the diarrhea as well as check for anything else she might have picked up. Maltese have very delicate systems. You need to feed dry food only, since you said she will eat it. However, you need to continue to feed whatever the breeder was feeding her and gradually change over to a good dry puppy food. Dry food is better for the teeth, there is less odor, and the waste is more solid, generally speaking. Please speak to your vet about this. He can help you select a good food. Feed the same food every day, and don't give anything else(except an occasional treat), this can help prevent upsets. Let us know how your baby is doing-Get her to the vet, o.k?

Wendy-I forgot to mention that the Iams dry puppy food is fine to feed if this is what your baby is used to.

Wendy, both of my boys were on Pedigree dry when I got them. I got some canned Pedigree puppy to supplement and both got diahrea. I would cut that out right away. Also, try putting some Karo syrup (about 1/4 tsp to 1/2 cup water) in the water. These babies tend to get hypoglycemic up until about 6 months of age. This could have something to do with the low energy level. Good luck.

Wendy, I also had a problem with Tasha, one day she got the runniest stools and vomiting up slime, I thought she got into some poison plant. I was feeding her Iams dry with Authority dry and authority wet. It was when I was switching her over to Iams that her stools were always loose. My vet recommended Iams, not for Tasha! I now have her on Purina one lamb and rice also mixed with authority puppy, dry only, she's doing great. I also switched my Pom over to Purina one, lamb and rice. Personally I swear by it. But what's good for one isn't necessary the answer for another. Good luck.

Wendy, I have Buster on IAMS Dry Puppy Food and he is doing fine. My vet said no canned dog food for them.. the canned is too rich for their tummies. I would put Sophie on the dry only. I would also get her to the vet just to make sure.

Rice is binding and is a natural antidote to loose stools. Mix with some cooked chicken and vegetables (cut very small!) It's much better than commercial food.

Hi Wendy: I would get rid of the Pedigree canned dog food. I tried it before and had soo-ooo many problems with it. My mom has tried it on her Yorkie and had problems too. Take care!

Quiggley slept alot for his first month or so, it made it so easy for potty training. He would sleep for 2 hours, out for about 20 minutes, sleep for 2 hours and sometimes 3 hours. Every time I brought him out of crate I kept him on his wee wee pad, directly in front of crate, until he went, we played, I put him back on wee wee pad before going back in crate. Little by little I moved the pad further away, if he missed I put it back closer until no more misses. It only took 2 wks for the pad to end up in the bathroom. Quiggley only had 2 accidents and that was his potty training. Also he was never allowed to wonder very far from the pad. I also kept his food and water (shallow dish) in the crate with him. I slowly put Quiggley on Pro Plan lamb and rice dry food and his stools are the best little stools ever (LOL)! Hope sophie is doing better.

I haven't had this problem with Snowball but my Mom did with her 20 year old poodle. He was having runny stools so my mom took him to her vet. The vet said to give him (Muffin) some cottage cheese - a few tablespoons full and wah-lah - no more diahhrea. Good luck.

Sorry to hear about your babies up set tummy- these little angels have such delicate systems-In an emergency my vet says to give thema few drops of pepto-bismol-just a few-for a grown dog in the 4-5 lbs range its 1/2 tspnfl. I have four little guys and cook for them as I find any canned dog food is to rich and usually full o chemicals which I shy away from for them-when i say little guys I'm talking size not age-my recipe for food is in the discussion for finicky eater if your interested- hope you find a solution- also puppies will pick up anything loose and try to eat it-paper ,leaves buttons -you have to be very careful about
keeping things off the floor-also well meaning friends will sometimes try to feed your dog something that will upset them -"but he only ate 1 potatoe chip-" that's all it takes and you hav an upset stomach. Tatiana,Love,Andy,M.C. & Sophie
