emeregency visit glycemia/liver
by Babs
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
This morning my 14week old baby boy Remington did not respond-he started to have a seizure, and I grabbed the phone to get the vet. He then had two more seizures. My husband and I did everything your site said to do--screened the breeder, got him at 11 weeks, had our house prepared, etc. He has Coccidia (parasite)-- we checked him out at the vet, and put him on Albon suspension. He is 1.4lbs. He had diarrhea the last four days, isn't eating as much as he should, his balance is off, and then I woke up to my baby almost dead. He was treated for hypoglycemia, and has an IV in him right now--but he didn't bounce back like he should have. The vet is going to test his blood for the liver shunt problem when he is better in about 3 days because the blood tests today showed the proteins to be wrong. I am so crushed! He is my baby! I do have a full year guarantee against any life threatening genetic defects-The breeder will give me a replacement puppy--I'm so glad that I followed your site's advice on getting a Maltese. My little baby is sick, and I'm just so upset! I have three tumors in my head along with serious migraines, and I don't think I could take any more bad news right now. Remmie is my baby as I can't have any of my own and I'm only 28. Please keep us in your prayers!!!

Babs: I too am so very sorry to hear this. I will pray for you and your baby. I went through a similar situation with my very first maltese four years ago. She had parvo. I know the pain you are feeling. Please keep us posted as to his condition. Keep the faith!

UPDATE: Thank you SSSOOOOOOO much for the support, you gave me a boost, and Remmie saw mommy smile. I read him the messages, and then showered him with kisses. I was up all night with him, feeding him with a syringe every two hours, and back to the vet today. They've kept the catheter in his arm, and the vet thinks he already has neurological damage--he was circling and circling in the blankets in the cage--I realized what was going on...the poor little one is successfully potty trained, and needed to go poo :-) That's all. He didn't want to mess up his baby blanket. What a champ. The breeder is just horrified about this whole thing, and told me I could drop him off with her if I needed to. Thanks to all of you who built this website and contributed, I was able to pick the right breeder/family. She is helping me out as much as she can. Remmie's tests come back on Tuesday, and we will know for sure about the liver shunt problem. I am praying he will not have this problem, and that he will recoop. Thank you again for all the wonderful messages! They made me feel stronger again, so that I can help out my baby and "keep the faith". Oh, and my homeopathic doctor made Remmie a remedy to soothe him through this so it won't be traumatic and harsh on his body and soul. Bless his little heart.

Babs, my thoughts and prayers are with you and Remmie. I know
how hard something like this is. I went through a similar experience recently. Hold on to as many positive thoughts as you can during this difficult time.

Babs, I'm so sorry to hear of the problems you and Remmie are having. Sounds like he's getting better. Please keep us updated, okay? By the way, I was 27 when my ability to have children was taken away (I''ll be 47 Tuesday). There are a lot of us here who are "human childless" and our maltese are filling that void. I understand that part of what you're going through. Keep the faith and give Remmie a smooch for me, and if you can twist those lips around, give yourself one from Baxter & Rudy.

UPDATE: Little Remmie (even now called Remskie by my hubby) is eating chicken I boiled in boillon like it is going out of style!!! I haven't ever seen him eat this much-three servings. He's eating the tapioca/cottage cheese mix, of course with my help, and he slept with me last night--we got up every three hours for feeding and peeing. He barked, growled, cried, and ran!!! I am so happy--things are definitely looking UP. He got his first haircut last night (I saved his little hairs for his baby book), and I pray to God that the bile acid test will come back negative tomorrow because he is doing much much better now!
He isn't playing with his toys yet, nor is he chewing on things, but all in good time hopefully! Praise the Lord! Thanks everyone for keeping us in your prayers!!!

Baby Remington Steele does NOT have a liver shunt!!! He had severe hypoglycemia from what we can tell, and went into shock. He wasn't eating like he should, even though he would poop and it looked to me like he was eating enough. Turns out he's a finiky eater, and loves chicken breast in boillon. It's important that he eat his kibble, so I've been soaking that in the chicken broth with the chicken. I've looked through the archives, and there are wonderful suggestions on what prepared foods are good for this-the select dinners, the Gerber meat sticks, the nutri-cal, etc. Also, I love the puppy recipes!!! So, I have a little "character" here, and we are going to have lots of fun together!!! This afternoon he finally "played rough" and chewed. We were wondering when our baby would come back to life! We sure do love this little fur friend. Oh, and he's got whining down to a TEE!!! He's got Mommy and Daddy right where he wants us. *LOVE*

Babs, how wonderful, I just tingled all over to hear of your great news!
Gloria
Babs, such great news! So happy Remskie is making such good progress. I have a finicky eater in Rudy who also has allergies. It's very difficult when they are puppies because there are not a lot of choices in puppy food, and what there is is bland. Ask your vet about the new Eukanuba prescription food. It's for dogs, but Rudy has been on dog food since he was about five months old. This kibble is made from catfish and herring. Rudy turned down cooked chicken for it. I couldn't believe it. He didn't like the canned at all. He's still finicky, but at least I know he's getting his protein and fat when he nibbles on this food. Good luck!
