afraid of food dish
by Jennifer & Tanner
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
I bought a new food container, the stainless still kind that holds 2 dishes and is on a stand. Well, Tanner loved this, then one day he started barking and really seemed like he was getting hurt, well, we ran in to the kitchen and the bowls were turned over with water everywhere. Tanner was so scared! Now, he will not eat out of any dish I even put the food on the floor and he won't eat. I have to make him eat out of my hand. Still he barks at the food and is also not drinking water. I am very worried about my litte guy, he's only 4 1/2 months old. Nothing was in the kitchen with him.....please help before my baby starves!

DISCUSSION:

Really don't know how to help you, EXCEPT, I was told by many people to use ceramic bowls, for both water and food. So I got rid of the plastic and metal and my doggies are doing just fine.

Jennifer, try changing his feeding location to another room completely...and put food in a completely different container...his old bowl....and if you have to get water into him with an eyedropper, do it. Just be sure to put the dropper into his cheek instead of down the hatch! Feed him by hand FROM the bowl a bit , then sit back and wait fot him to take a bite from the bowl and on and on. Ane for goodness sakes, get that puppy out and socialize him with strangers, other dogs, children, and LOUD and UNUSUAL noises. Take it easy on the noises at first....and don't coddle that boy!! Have fun.

Do you still have Tanner's old dishes? If you do maybe you could try putting them in a new place. When Kelley was a pup she stepped on the edge of a saucer her daddy had put a treat in. The saucer jumped up and to hear her tell it this saucer chased her and tried to kill her. She is 4 years old now and still won't touch a plate or any of their relatives including bowls. If her dishes ever wear out I better be able to find duplicates.

I agree with Anne. Your baby probably developed a phobia and that is why he is scared to eat from those bowls now. I use ceramic bowls and my girls eat in the kitchen. You may need to change the location of where you will be keeping the bowls down at. He is probably terrified of the room that happened in. Good Luck!

Jennifer, could Tanner have gotten an electrical shock or something? Maybe caused by static electricity? Just a thought.

Hello! Thanks everyone for the good advice, I will be trying a ceramic bowl. also, I was using puppy chow lamb and rice and changed his food to AVo puppy food. this is much better for him and he loves it! He probably stopped eating because his old food was yucky!! Also, Tanner is not coddled but loved dearly, he is taking kindergarten and doing very well. I live across the street from a park and he plays there everyday. I also have two small children, so Tanner has plenty of noise. My kids were asleep the time of the mishap with his bowls, first thing I asked my husband was what did the kids do! even though my children, ages 4 and 8, are never left alone with Tanner. I will keep you posted, since Tanner is still wanting to be hand fed. Thanks.....

The same thing happened to Quiggley with the same dishes, one day he was trying to eat and everytime he went for a bite he would jump back and act scared. He had just gotten his tags and they were clanking ever so slightly on the dish when he started to take a bite. Quiggley is strickly a house dog and I just took his collar off and put it back on if we went someplace or were doing leash training or whatever. He is now taller and it doesn't bother him.
