Burping and Giardia?
by Andrew
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Hi everyone. I have a brand new eight week old Maltese, Bailey.
The second night we had him, we had to rush him to the vet because he almost died. Alot of vomiting and diarrhea going on that night, and then he just laid down as if he were giving up and we couldn't get him to open his eyes. Now, five days later, he's 100% better, except he ALWAYS burps and it sounds like he has trouble swallowing, as if it takes a good effort to get the water down. I grind his Eukanueba up, so that's not a problem, but the water is. Could there be something wrong with his throat?
DISCUSSION:
Andrew, 8 weeks is early to bring a maltese home. They really shouldn't come home till they're 12 weeks or more. I'm glad you made it through that frightening experience. What did the vet say was wrong? Have you called the vet about this new development? Please do. Are you saying he can eat but not drink? Andrew, please call the vet right away, Good luck.
Marie
Andrew, When MalteseOnly opens there is a directory to the left. Scroll down to collapsing trachea and see if this sounds like the problem Bailey is having. You should consider seeing your vet just in case.

Andrew: I agree with Marie and Dottie. I would take him to the vet immediately. He can dehydrate from not getting enough water. Please take him in ASAP. Take care!

Andrew, please tell us what the vet said was wrong with Bailey. Why did he have diarrhea and vomiting?

When I took Bailey to the vet, he found giardia, and that was the cause of the vomiting and diarrhea. But I was so upset about that, I forgot to ask him about the burping. I'm taking Bailey to the vet on Friday and will ask about the burping and swallowing then. And he is completely healthy now, as far as the giardia goes, his stools are firm, and he hasn't thrown up any. The doctor put him on Flagyl, and it seemed to work. He drinks plenty of water and his appetite has doubled, he cleans his dish now! It's just that sometimes he acts as if he's having a little trouble swallowing.

Andrew, by trouble swallowing, does it sound like a goose honk? It could be reverse sneezing. Rudy does that and after a spell, he always burps. I assume it's because of the air he sucks into his belly.

So glad to here that Bailey is doing better. Just a quick FYI...
Guairdia is a parasite common in cattle, etc...it usually is contracted via contaminated water, foods rinsed in such water.
I would be careful when handling stools from Bailey and dispose of the fecal waste in double bags. Wash your hands thoroughly after cleaning up after your baby and after grooming. I would continue to do so until the Flagyl has been taken the full course and further tests come back negative. This parasite DOES affect humans. I nearly lost a dear friend to it. A bleach solution is a good one to use for cleaning around the house. We generally use similar solutions in the hospital with contagious diarrhea. Keep us posted on Bailey's progress! Bailey is doing so well! It does sound like he is honking, and I called the breeder about it, she said that since he licks his paws and body so much, that it could either be the reverse sneezing or a hairball. He's only done the "honking" thing once, and hasn't done it since. And about the giardia precautions, I read up on it and have been using a bleach and water solution to wipe it up if Bailey has an accident. Then I wipe it down with vinegar so Bailey can't smell it anymore. I'm taking Bailey to the a vet tomorrow that specializes in small breeds of dogs for his second vaccination. He still hasn't finished all of the Flagyl, but when he does, I'm taking him again. Thanks for all you guys' concern and advice! It's very much appreciated!
