epileptic

ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
My maltese, the wonderful Baxter, is epileptic. He is on perscription medication which is usually very helpful, however he recently had a seizure. Does anyone know what i should do while he is going through them to help him? Also my pup constently licks me and my family, I heard that Malteses often have ocd, does anyone know anything about that? Thank you.

DISCUSSION:

Elaina: Sorry to hear your Baxter is having problems:( I'm not a vet, but I can tell you what I would do. During a seizure, I would be there and hold him and talk very slowly and calmly to him. You really need to ask your vet about what to do for him medically during a seizure as well. He can tell you the proper things to do. As far as him licking you and your family--sounds to me like he is just giving kisses. He is showing you and the family he loves all of you. My girls lick me and my husband constantly too. It's a sweet gesture your little guy is making to you. Take care!

There are quite a number of malteses that are lickers. Mine (chibi) is one of them. I don't mind it at all. She also responds to the command of "give me a kiss".

I have friends who have an epileptic cat who is also on medication. she does have a seizure once in a while, and my friends say that their vet told them to just stay out of her way to keep themselves from getting hurt. They say that when it's over, the cat gets extra affectionate and crawls into their laps to be petted. Nothing like a little love to help recover from a bad experience. I've also heard that epileptic animals tend to have more seizures when they're younger and they have less when they're mature. I'll have to see what happens with my friends' cat as she gets older.

Elaina, several years ago, I had a poodle who was epileptic. Whenever she had a seizure, we would wrap her in a towel & hold her tightly (not too tight). We would also keep aneye on her tounge to make certain that she did not swallow it. The main thing is to keep her comfortable & don't let her know how scared you are during her attacks. Hope this helps! Best of luck.

Elaina, I have a Baxter too! He was two in January and he is also Mr. Wonderful. I can't offer any info on what to do during a seizure. As for the licking, my little Rudy, 9 mos old, is champion licker of the world. You can't get close (within 5 inches) to him with out that tongue automatically sticking out for a lick. I have to coax kisses out of Baxter.

Elaina, What is ocd? My tiffini is a constant licker and her tongue is out licking at the air before she even reaches us, alsoo she licks a spot on her pillow every night sometimes the size of a basketball. She will growl if I try too stop her, even do bit of stay awaw\y nip. She does not bite but she tells me "this is mine, don't touch.
