Noah Has Colitis?
by April B & Noah
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
I took Noah for his annual checkup, today. The vet said he looked great, still at 8 pounds. He is still having problems with passing these loose, mucousy stools. It seems to come and go. The vet said he thinks Noah has Colitis and put him on medication. He said it is quite common and could be brought on by excitement or diet. I changed to lamb and rice and the vet is reluctant to change foods again because he has been doing so well up until recently. He wants to wait and see if the medicine clears him up. Noah feels fine, but I'm a little worried. Has anyone else experienced this sort of thing?

DISCUSSION:

April: I've have never heard of this in a dog before but wanted to say I hope Noah feels better and the medication works for him. Take care!

April, Baxter went through a little of that. He was a little over a year I think, if that has anything to do with it. Mucousy is a good way to describe it. Not really diahrea, but had clumps of mucous in his stools. I called the breeder and she said it just happens sometimes and not to worry about it. It would happen maybe once a week for awhile but it soon went away on its own. That was over a year ago. Good luck with Noah.

April, Chibi has gotten colitis four three times the past 3 years. The episodes were caused by excitement or anxiety. Over the holidays, we go to New York to visit my family. My sister has 5 dogs that act as a pack and gang-up on her. I had to rush her to ER New Years day because of colitis. She was fine when we got back home here in Los Angeles. It's just one of those things.

April, Amber had the same problem about a year ago. It went away on its own. I hope Noah feels better soon. Have a great day!

April, I've had problems with Tasha since I had her. Iams dog food just didn't work for her, The only thing that was compatible with her system was Authority dog food, BUT it has dried blood in it which gave her a kind of reddish color to her goatee. She's now just turned 9mos. and I bought Purina One. She is doing great, I mix that with her puppy Authority food, and believe me she goes for the Purina. My other little Pom is now on it and they both love it, no problems with stools or throwing up. Hope this helps.

When I took my pup, Jack, to the vet the first time (10 weeks), I mentioned seeing mucous in his stools and that the stools were on the loose side. The vet said he had colitis and to put a little psyllium (Metamucil) in his puppy food and it took care of the problem completely. Jack's 7 months old now and he still gets a pinch of psyllium on his food daily and it keeps everything moving well and his stools are firm.
