I need some answers
by Amanda
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
My mom is thinking about getting a Maltese. I just wanted to know some info. on them. Should I get a puppy? Boy or Girl? My mom wants me to get some information for her, and her freind. Please help me on my problem.

DISCUSSION:

The Maltese is a small, lap dog, highly affectionate and very sweet natured. They do not shed, but the hair must be cut and there is daily grooming involved. Either male or female make excellent companions. I adore my Maltese, and would never have anything else!

Amanda: Maltese are wonderful! Very good choice! As far as you getting a puppy or adult--I feel that is a personal decision to make. Maybe sit down with your Mom and discuss the matter together. A puppy is a lot of work--but worth it! If your family would rather have an older dog--maybe you can rescue a maltese in need of a loving home. As far as getting a boy or girl--that's another choice you will need to make. I have three girls. I really didn't chose a girl over a boy for any specific reason--it just turned out to be that way. Our first was a girl so we stuck with girls. Good Luck!

Amanda, these are common questions that prospective matie owners ask. Go to the archives and look through them. They will answer any questions you have about temperment of the maltese, choosing a boy or girl, finding a reputible breeder, etc. Good Luck!!

Amanda, DON'T BUY ANY DOG FROM A PETSHOP. As was mentioned by Laurie, pick a reputible breeder and buy that baby after it's at least 12 weeks old. Reading the MalteseOnly archives will give you more info on Maltese and answer questions you didn't even know you had.

Amanda, you dont say how old you are, but are you old enough to take care of a Maltese? They require a little more care than most dogs because of their hair and their eyes. And they need a lot of attention because they are people dogs. They follow you everywhere, even if you dont want them too :) And they can get underfoot a lot. But they are sweet natured, lovable, cute, cuddly, smart and fun. Linda is right when she says to go through the archives, there is a wealth of information there. Good luck with your decision and either boy or girl will do just fine :)

Amanda, I recently acquired a female maltese pup. My last was a male and I agonized over male vs. female. Everything I read and breeders I talked to said either it didn't matter, or they thought the males were more loving. I loved my boy and he was devoted to me, but he was a bit aggressive..would bark non-stop sometimes and had snapped a few times. I had a trainer come in when he was a pup who told me he was good natured, but would want to be boss (and he was!). My female is much quieter, and plays and is frisky, but does not exhibit the hyper behavior that my male did (one friend called him "extra-frisky"!). She is much easier to deal with. Of course, this is just my limited experience, and the first pup had other problems (bad hips, knees, etc) that lead me to believe he was not carefully bred. This time I went to a reputable breeder so I'm sure that made a big difference right there. Although, this breeder also had a male and the female was much calmer..maybe just a cooincidence ..? Hope I don't start a big male/female controversy! I loved my male to pieces!

Amanda-Hi-when we were looking for a maltese, we spoke to breeders, to get advice on them. We were looking at yorkie vs maltese. Breeders area font of knowledge, and I agree with Linda-DO NOT GO TO A PET SHOP!!! A good reputable breeder will not let you even look at a puppy before 12 weeks. If you get a puppy, you can train it your way-if she wants less training work, tell her to get an adult. I don't think male or female makes much difference, except for leg lifting. If you fix a male before his first heat, he'll always squat. I've seen it-it really works. But, keep reading these maltese web sites, and talk to a number of breeders who can tell you which is best for the environment. You want the dog to fit the home-Good Luck Also, check out your breeder-get references before purchasing.

Thanks for what you have said. My mom and her freind really apricate it. I always thought that haveing a puppy was better than an older dog. Thanks again for all your help.
