Thunder and Lightening
by Chris and Jack
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Thunder and LighteningJust recently Jack has become deathly afraid of thunder and lightening. He starts to shake uncontrolably and pants non stop. This will go on until the storm passes. At times he will crawl under the covers to the bottom of the bed and sit there and shake. My wife and I try to comfort him but he wants no part of it. He is just scared. It has gotten so bad that he does this when it only rains.Has anyone been able to solve this problem. I feel bad for him. He shakes so bad I am afraid he is going to do some damage inside. Is this possible? Should I be o concerned, or just try to comfort him unitl the storm passes.

On a side note, where are some of the unusual places that some of your dogs will hide during a storm? Thanks, Chris & Jack

DISCUSSION:

Chris, we just had some violent thunder and lightening storms during the past week. In fact, if you watched the news, a tornado touched down in Willow Grove PA. That's two miles from our house. Baxter was never bothered much by electrical storms and I was wondering how Rudy would do. This is our first season with him. Well, he was fine I think because we, ourselves, didn't react to the the thunder and lightening (other than to say, "holy sh--!" now and then), but we made a point not to get openly excited about it. The thunder startled him once in a while and he would look at us. We just did not make of him or acknowledge all the stuff going on outside. Were you upset by the storm? Dogs can sense your emotions and I'll bet Jack is picking up on your reactions. Just a thought.

Chris, sorry can't help you out, all my guys sleep right thru it. I agree with Marie, don't make a big deal of it and he may calm down.

I agree. Trying to comfort him just makes it worse. Why not try getting his attention with a game or a treat and a lot of laughter rather than concern. They do pick up on what we feel and amplify it.

Chris, My Carty is TERRIFIED of thunder and lightning; meanwhile Lucy could care. This is the time of year for such storms, and we had a doozy night before last. The scenario went like this. I am sound asleep, Lucy out like a light, when I hear pant, pant, pant (imagine how LOUD this is to wake me up) then scratch, scratch, scratch on the bed. I pick the Boo Boy up and put him on the bed. First he goes under the covers and curls up as close to me as he can. Next boom and flash, his head is out and more panting. He now lies down and puts his head on my chest and I give him a few pats and some sympathy. A few minutes later, another boomer and light show and he moves to the space between the head of the bed and my head--nose in my hair, shivering and panting all the while. Lucy, by the way, has slept through all of this after a kind of haughty look at Boo that says: Big Baby; I'm trying to sleep here; get over it! After the storm, he gets off the bed and goes to his basket like nothing ever happened. I didn't get this baby until he was 6 so have no way of knowing where the fear comes from, but I can tell you he plans to hang onto it [ggg]! The only thing he hates less than storms is being on the bed (I think his last family used to kick him off because if he's on the bed and you move your feet he bites), so I know this is a true terror for him. Haven't a clue how to solve it, particularly at this age. Maybe we'll both get some ideas here.

My Phoebe came at age 1 year with a reaction to thunderstorms and even high winds. Panting, shaking, eyes rolling, refusing to be comforted. If you held her in your lap she would pee right on you. Found the best thing was to crate her and drape a towel over the crate. When the noise stops she will signal that she's ready to come out. Sometimes she has wet and soiled the crate, but not so much lately (she is four years old now).

Cubbie likes to climb my neck! He trembles, but now he is starting to bark back at the thunder!

Our 3 Maltese and one of our Aussies could care less. Our other Aussie, the male, is scared to death and wants to sit on a lap with his head under an arm. Our oldest Maltese, Kelley, barks at the thunder to chase it away.

my tiffany can hear the storm coming long before anyone. i dont need a weatherman. she hides and digs at the carpet in a corner. in the night i have to get up and sit with her with the lights on. i can't hold her because she gets worse. just have some patience. after all i think we are all afraid of something
