AKC & DNA?
by ricky
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
AKC & DNA?After reading the reponses on registering pups with the AKC, it is very maddening to have my gut feelings confirmed. Knowing that as long as you send in your money, anything can be registered is just not right. I have dealt with the AKC many years ago when I used to breed German Shepards, and yes, it is very sickening. I have informed them on people that were breeding bad hips and they did nothing. So, as far as believing the AKC is out there to maintain the breed, I don't believe it for a second.

What I would like to know is, why can't the AKC do DNA testing? The American Quarter Horse Assoc. has made it a rule in 1998 that no foal can be registered unless it has DNA testing. We are very happy about this, as it eliminates the possiblity of switching papers on horses. The only people it hurts are the ones that do the switching. And they are of no benefit to the Association anyways. I do believe if the AKC could come up with such a test it could eliminate alot of junk breeders and puppy farms. Speaking for myself, I would not mind spending alittle bit extra to register and test a pup to insure that I was buying or selling quality and not quantity.

DISCUSSION:

The AKC's bread & butter is the junk breeders and puppyfarms. They do not want to eliminate them.

sounds like a great idea ricky but do u think the money making orginization is going to give up it's bread and butter! I think not. Maybe a letter campain from all owners requesting Dna testing would get the ball rolling in the right direction. It would be interesting to see if they would listen to breeders and owners.

I do know the junk breeders and puppy farms are AKC's bread and butter. It use to be that way for the AQHA also. Untill alot of people got together and decided enuf was enuf. I personally, have no idea where you would start. If anyone has any suggestions about where to start, I would sure like to know.

The Akc has started doing DNA testing.

I think that the DNA program the AKC has gotten into may have some merit if done properly. It will no doubt be a huge money maker for them. They pay $15 per test and charge you $40. They have random testing as part of their inspections now and if the kennel requests a retest for any reason whether be human error or done improperly, the AKC charge is $250.00 to come back.

What concerns me is why UC Davis is strict about no food or water for 15 minutes prior to taking the cheek swab while the AKC doesn't concern themselves about this rule when testing? Both tests are identical.

Jay, I was unaware the AKC did DNA testing. As you stated, it has to be done properly. What bothers me the most, is seeing these so called breeders kicking out pup after pup and the AKC does absolutely nothing to control it. They can't tell me that in this age of computers, they don't have a record of how many litters are being registered per person. If they don't, that is poor management. Maybe I am being unrealistic, but alot of people thought the AQHA would never take that stand either. Thanks for listening to me rant about this.
