Grouchy Groomers
by Polly
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Grouchy Groomers My pup is 16 weeks old and I am having trouble getting the groomer to keep my "Buddy" in a short hair cut until it cools off some and until he has mastered toilet training. He will only go outside (not on paper) and we live in Florida..(hot, hot, hot)while standing in grass or mulch. Everything sticks to his legs and when I ask the groomer she says I am ruining his "look". Well when I have to clean him up about 14 times per day I really think the "look" isn't as important as a job well done. How can I get her to cut him close for now??? This is a small town without many choices of groomers!!! HELP

DISCUSSION:

Polly, I'm sorry but you are paying this groomer good money to do what you want, not what they want. I would tell this person they will do it your way or you will take your business elsewhere. Is there more than one groomer at the place you are taking Buddy. If so switch people. Or you may need to find someone else.

Perfect excuse to buy a Flowbee and do it yourself!

Polly, I think your groomer isn't thinking beyond the "look" when Buddy walks out the door. I'm sure Buddy looks great when she's done with him, but you must convince her that his "look" doesn't wear well. I would explain to her what happens and let her know she must do as you ask. By the way, at 14 weeks, how many times has he been groomed?
Marie
Stick to your guns about what you want. The customer should always get what they want even if a groomer doesn't agree. Try the groomer one more time and let them know you will find someone else if they don't do what you ask. I'm sure they won't want to lose your business.

Polly, maybe, your groomer is increasing her business by suggesting you keep your baby in the longer cut. I'm sure they need grooming less frequently when they are in the short cut. My groomer told me the same thing--not to cut the coat short and it looks so great when I leave there, but guess what, it's been one week since her last "trim" and she needs it again. After reading all the good "stuff" about the shorter trim, I'm going to give it a try for summer.

By the way, last night I did a little bit of trimming while my husband held her--mostly the area between the back legs where it is easily soiled. I wasn't too worried about it b/c she needs trimming again soon and the groomer could fix it. It looked great. Why don't you try just doing a little trimming back there--you'll be surprised!!

Polly, I'm sorry but you are the paying customer and you should get what you want, not what groomer wants. I would take my business elsewhere or try do it myself. Maybe if you let the groomer know you will find someone else, she/he may have a different view if she/he doesn't want to lose your business. My groomer never questions my requests. My girls are not show dogs. That's why I have her grooming my dogs for 7 years now. Have a great day!

Yes, everyone is right. You are the customer. You should get what you want. But don't come off too strong, because if she is really grouchy she might be mean to your baby. If you can be there when she's getting groomed. Sorry this is the way I think. Always suspicious of people who give off that kind of first impression.

Polly, you should only pay for what you want! So next time you have Your dog groomed tell the groomer exactly what you want, also tell her it will not be paid for unless done to your specifications. I'm blessed, I've got a honey of a groomer. Good luck.

What is it with people these days? YOU are the customer, and the customer is always right! If that groomer wants your money, then she'd better learn to keep her mouth shut, or get out of the business.

Hi Everybody! I am a professional groomer. I think groomers try to keep dogs looking like they were taught in grooming school. I feel that it is up to the owner how they want their dog and if the groomer won't comply I would find another groomer. I have a male maltese in a puppy cut and is look great and feels much better than if he was in his full coat. Good luck and happy grooming. Kim Raggmopp Babies Grooming Salon

I had a maltese that I lost recently, but I used to have him groomed every 5 or 6 weeks. I always hating leaving him as he seemed so upset. Then when he was 9 yrs old he had knee surgery and I was afraid to have him groomed because I was worried they wouldn't be careful with him. This groomer did a good job, but a couple of times he pooped when I brought him in and he never would do something like that so I was afraid they were hurting him. Anyway, I decided I would do it myself. Nothing fancy, just a small pair of scissors and the clippers with a safety catch for his nails. I put him on the toilet bowl seat so he would stay put. He didn't love it, but he let me do it..he didn't look as good as when he went to the groomer, but I got better at it and I'm sure it was less traumatic for him (And me!). I'm looking into getting another and I plan to groom the new pup too.
