harness or collar?
by Isabel
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
harness or collar? I believe that it's better to use a harness because if you have to yank your little one out of danger, they won't get their necks snapped in the process. I've been told it ruins their hair. But what's more important...beauty or safety? And if it's not on except when they're outside, how much damage can it do?

DISCUSSION:

Isabel--I couldn't agree with you more. Cubbie has both, but I only use the harness now. We got the harness for the same reason, the collar makes me feel as if I am going to break his neck. It gave me a creepy feeling. So what if the harness is harder to get on because of all the hair....his neck means more to me than his hair.

Ditto, Isabel. I use a harness on Buster. Who cares about his hair. His health is more important.

When Casper and i go for a walk, he wears a harness. But, I confess, I do have a black rhinestone collar that I put on him , especialy right after a trip to the groomer, just because he looks sooo gorgeous! (But I always take it off at night, or if I am leaving him alone, to prevent snagging or getting caught on something.) Don't most Maltese owners have a rhinestone collar somewhere? Unless you can afford real diamonds, that is!

Noah has a beautiful collar that he wears but I use a nylon cat harness for walks. It is light and slips on and off easily and there is little tangling of his hair.

Oh what the heck, Marcia. A party with good friends, a fresh hairdo and a bauble or two...what could it hurt? Did you know that they actually have rhinestone tiaras for little dogs? and pearl and rhinestone necklaces? I also saw a sequined frock for evening wear the other day. Hysterical. Adorable. But I'm glad to hear the harness is common for serious outings.

Marie, I confess-Noah also wears a black rhinestone collar-I was thinking of getting a red one -what do you think?

Yes, the rhinestone collars are adorable. Sophie owns one, too. However, it still does not fit her. Even if it did I would not use a collar on her. (I bought it before getting her and before I knew better) We use a harness. Yes, it does cause problems with their hair. Sophie mats and it is sometimes hard to get on with all that hair. BUT...safety comes first! You wouldn't think of not wearing your seatbelt because it wrinkles your clothes, would you? Once, we were at a friends house and Sophie was playing with their Cocker. They were fine, and then all of a sudden the Cocker went after her. My husband had to yank on the leash and pull her up so she would not be bitten. If she had been wearing a collar, he would have probably broken her neck. We have found that making the harness a little loose helps to prevent matting, and we brush her immediately after it is taken off. The cute, rhinestone collars, in my opinion, should only be used as a fashion accessory and you know that you will only be carrying your baby!
