Black Points
by Cindy
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Black PointsCan someone let me know at what age a Maltese pup should have their black points completely filled in, mostly the nose and eye rims?

DISCUSSION:

Cindy, Busters "Black Points" came in around 5 months old. Although at almost 10 months his eyelids are still pink. His nose and lips are black. His little pads on his feet are also turning black.

I really don't know. "Alex" had his nose and eye rims black from the day a got him (10 weeks).

When I first went to see my Noah before I could take him home, he was about eight weeks old. All of his points were in including the black paw pads. He was precious! He is now 14 months old and the points have darkened a little.

I didn't know what black points were until I found this web site. Someone else asked that question some time ago. The term was used on Tammy's papers and "black points" sounded like something awful. However, it refers to the black eyerims ("eyeliner"), black lips, and black paw pads. Tammy's black eyelids and lips were evident from the first time I got her at 14 weeks. The color hasn't changed much, but they were very black and noticeable. All her paw pads are else jet black except for one paw pad which partially pink. It doesn't bother me though because it's only aesthetic. Although she is a beautiful pup, most importantly, I just want her to be healthy. For those of who are curious, check out her pic in the photo album under Tammy!

I just spoke to the breeder that I'm getting my new baby from and she says her black points are there already. She's only 4 weeks old. SO 4 weeks or 8 months is quite a stretch!!!

Thanks for enlightening me to what black points are. My baby has it on his papers, and I thought it was some type of flaw. I'm happy to learn what they are. I think my baby is beautiful, black points or not.
