I'm moving to college
by Christy
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
I'm moving to collegeI am moving to college and my parents say my maltese goes crazy if I am just gone for the weekend. I am worried about leaving him. Will he get used to me not being home? How can I help him with this new transition? Just wondering if anyone has been through this with their dog.

DISCUSSION:

Christy, maybe if you leave an article of clothing behind. Perhaps wear a t-shirt to bed for several nights just before you leave and put it in his favorite place to be. Good luck at college!

Hmm! That's a tough one Christy! Can you stay off campus, and if so do they allow pets? When I went a way to college (9 years ago.) I had a cat, Tiger. We were 'joined at the hip'. I started including my father in play & bonding time to make the transaction a little bit easier. It helped a little but he still missed me. My father said he would go in my room and started meowing, and looking for me. I called home on a regular basis and I would 'talk' to him and he would meow back at me. My father said he would sniff at the phone, and look around. I guess he was puzzled as to where I was. Well, by the nest semester even though he missed me he had found a 'surrogate mommy' in my father and wasn't as lonely when I was away (according to my father.) He still would come 'flying & purring' at me as soon as I came home on holidays. I guess that was his way of telling him even though I was gone, I definitely wasn' forgotten. Well I hope this helps. Good luck with college, and keep us posted on how things develop.

When I was on break between my Freshman and Sophmore years at school I found my Cloud. He was born in my neighborhood and I saw him nearly every day until I took him home. He was to become a dog for the whole family, but right away he bonded most with me. I was sure that since he was just a little puppy at the time he would eventually become more attached to my mother who would be his primary caretaker when I went to college. He adores her, but he always remained my dog. He missed me terribly when I went away to school. He liked to go check my room to see if I had somehow gotten in while he wasn't looking. But he was loved and adored by those he was with and this is what he needed most, he got along quite well without me. I can't say the same for myself. I came home once a month mostly to see my dog. He always went wild with excitement when I came home. Through the rest of my three years in college this was our routine and then when I graduated he was able to live with me all the time and we love it that way.
