Too Much Fat?
by April B
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Too Much Fat?Noah has begun refusing his food again and has had loose stools. I called the Iams people and explained his problem, what the vet said, etc. He has been on the Eukanuba Premium Performance. This is a chicken-based food that has a high fat content. The Iams people told me that he is having trouble tolerating the food. Based on what I told them, they told me that he is getting too much fat. Is this common? Comments?

DISCUSSION:

Hi April, Sorry to hear Noah's not feeling well. I don't know about the Premium Performance but I had Bailey on the Eukanuba Puppy food and my Vet said that was fine until she was about 1 year old and then to change it because it contained too much fat. So while I don't know how common it is, it is at least known by some. I recently changed her diet to the ProPlan which seems to be really good. By the way, special little licks from Bailey to Noah.

I'v had Tasha on Iams also and have the same problem, not really loose stools but soft. I'm going to switch her to nature's receipe, not until she's on adult food tho. Maybe some little doggies can't tolerate certain foods, try switching , but slowly. Good luck. Me to

As puppies, our dogs seemed to vomit quite a bit when we fed them Eukanuba. They vomited (yellow bile)even more when we changed to Nutro's. I'm not sure what was causing the problem, but they are doing great since they have been on Nature's Recipe. I do believe it contains less fat than the others.

April, Eukanuba has just come out with a new food that can only be purchased through a vet's office. It's formulated for dogs, but the fat (12%) and protein (22%) are certainly high enough for an older puppy, especially a maltese. Rudy was getting extremely finicky to the point where he was appearing thin to me. (My point of reference, though, is Fat Bax - 10 lbs.) Anyway, Rudy has allergies so I'm very limited in what I can feed him. Between the stuff I can't feed him and the stuff he won't eat, there wasn't much. He did fine on the California Natural then just decided he'd had enough. I tried cooked chicken and vegetables, but he got loose stools. My husband picked this food it up yesterday and he (and Baxter) almost went wild with the first smell. Today is no different and I just pray his enthusiasm for this food continues. The first several ingredients are Potato, Herring Meal, Catfish (no wonder they love it, huh?) dried beet pulp, then it lists the vitamins, etc. It was $26 for 15 lbs. of which most is in the freezer.
