Puppy Cut
by Sunny
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Puppy CutI took my maltese, Maggie, to the groomer yesterday. She is 5 1/2 months old and looks precious in a puppy cut. It was time for a trim in order to maintain the puppy cut. After the groomer finished with her, she looked like she had been chewed by rats. I'm not exagerating. Does anyone know of any books or vidios available that teaches how to give a puppy cut? From now on , I want to do this myself. I know I can do as well as this groomer did with my eyes closed, but I want to do a much better job. Any help would be deeply appreciated. Thanks, Sunny

DISCUSSION:

Poor little Maggie! I do my own grooming on Cubbie and I hate to admit it, but sometimes he turns out like a rat too. But I am getting a little better. I'd like to find some information on this myself. I recently trimmed his ears much shorter, and that made all the difference in how he looks, much cuter. He still has the long hair on the tail, but everywhere else it is much shorter. However, I am thinking of cutting him down to about 1 inch, it is so hot already.

I had the same thing happen with Lucy. I took her for her first trim at 5 months and they did a great job on the face and feet, but the rest was very ragged. I tried a new groomer this time and was still not happy. This time the coat was not bad but whatever they used on her coat caused her to tangle really bad. After just one day I had to spend and hour combing out tangles. It did not make Lucy or I happy. So, another words, I would really be interested in some type of grooming video also.

I'm interested too. Been looking around, but the videos I've seen are for all kinds of dogs. I want a Maltese Only one! Jay, are you listening????

This is an interesting point. When I take Tessie to the groomer here in Italy, she always come out looking like a silly poodle. They cut her fur on her back so short I can see the skin underneath.....and the silly bob on the top! Yes, a picture I could take to the groomer would be very helpful. Thanks for bringing up this point

I purchased a grooming viedo just on the Maltese breed from the advertising section in Maltese Only . It wasn't real expensive, around $30 if I remember correctly. However, since I do not have Comet in long hair, I felt that I did not get much information about puppy cuts. A short cut was demonstrated, but it wasn't the look I wanted. I offered the video to my groomer, but she did not want it. I am spoiled by a wonderful woman that comes to our home every three weeks to groom Comet in his puppy cut.

I am glad to hear that I am not the only one who has had this horrible experience with the groomer. I have taken Bee Bee to three or four groomers and every time he gets out of there he looks like a plucked chicken. After the last grooming, I decided that I could do a better job myself. I clip him short, but I leave his tail and legs longer. (I like the pajama look on his legs) Since I have been grooming him myself the looks a hundred times better. I know what I want him to look like, but I dont seem to be able to convey it to the groomer. Just decide how you want your little one to look and go at it. Practice makes perfect. Good luck.

If you can't find a groomer that will do the kind of "puppy cut" you want, then before you cut your puppy's hair, sketch a picture of your puppy as it is then sketch a picture of how you would like your maltese to look then start making the changes on your puppy.

Sunny,I have stated this before in the discussion pages, but I have been using a "Flowbee" on my Dudley for over 4 years. The Flowbee is the weird devise that vacuums up the hair and cuts it off (it was in informercials on TV for a long time). I comes with spacers and you can cut the hair any length you want. I keep Dudley at about 1 1/2 - 2 inches. Groomers cannot cut that length except with sizzors! Can you imagine cutting hair that perfect? Well, the Flowbee does it, trust me - it is cut perfectly. Now Dudley does not like "haircut" time, but it's worth it. I never cut his ears or tail, but I do use sizzors around his face. I can certainly give you the phone number to order this. All you need is a vacuum with a hose attachment. Teri and Dudley

When Missie had her spinal tap done the vet had to shave a large area on the back of her neck. Also she had one leg shaved for blood tests. You can imagine she looked very strange with a full coat. I took her to my groomer and requested a Puppy Cut to even her up a bit. The groomer only had a photo of a Silky pup to work from but Missie looks wonderful. Her coat is a little shorter than I would have liked but we were trying to hide the shaved areas so it could all grow out together. The groomer has cut the ears quite short and squared them off. We took Missie into town for a walk after and she deffinatley passed the "oh how cute" test. If I can ever work out how I will post some photos one day.

Teri, thanks for your reply. I would like that number to order a Flowbe. We need all the help we can get. Thanks again! Sunny
Sunny
Me too. How do we get a flowbee?
Isabel
I need to ask a dumb question. Why keep the tail long if the Maltese is in a puppy cut? Thanks.
