Sick Puppy
by JOYCE
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Sick PuppyIt started about two months ago, with my two yr old maltese not jumping off the bed, concerned I took him to the vet they examined him & did a blood test. Test were neagtive, we thought maybe he got spooked. A few days later he was walking around with his tail & ears down, shaking, and when I went to pick him up he yelped. Back to the vet for xrays. Negative. Vet thought it may be a muscle spasm so he gave him a muscle relaxer, a few days later I thought I was going to lose him, I laid him on a heating pad & gave him baby aspirin ( I checked with my pharmacy on dosage) it seemed to help. Back to the vet who gave him a cordisone shot & tablets. On medication he's fine, otherwise he will revert to shaking (but no where near to before) anyone have any thoughts ??? I'm beside myself with worry.

DISCUSSION:

>Joyce, I'm so sorry for the agony you must be in trying to find out what is wrong with your baby. You mentioned he was shaking. Have you read the archives on white dog shaker syndrome? I know nothing about it, but have seen it posted here a few times. Good luck and please let us know how you're doing. (What's his name?)
Marie

Maybe this is a stretch...but sometimes when doctors can't tell what the cause is, it turns out to be parasites. They can attack the brain or the muscles, and they can be micoscopic in nature. Please go to the advertiser section and if you'd like to talk about it, call me.

Joyce, I'm sorry to hear that your baby isn't feeling very well. I would like for you to have your vet check out White Dog Shaker Syndrome. My baby, Maggie, was diagnosed with it last September. She was shaking, she would cry when we would pick her up, and she couldn't do any of her normal tricks...dancing, jumping, etc. The vets didn't have any idea what was wrong. My husband ended up finding out what it was.(He used the internet.) He asked the vet to check out White Dog Shaker Syndrome, and that is exactly what she had. We had also taken Maggie a number of times to the vet, and she also was given muscles relaxers and x-rays, every thing else under the sun. Poor baby. When she was finally diagnosed, she was give prednisone(steroids), 20 mg a day(10 in morning, 10 at night). She was better in no time.(I'm sorry this is so long, but I don't want to leave anything out that could help you.) We kept taking her dosage down, and making sure she was still doing ok. What I mean by she was better, she stopped shaking for the most part. For about 4-6 months, she just layed around and drank water. She didn't have enough strength to play. She would go to the bathroom all over the house(she couldn't hold it because of all the water she had to drink because of the steroids: side effect) But anyway, we left St. Louis and moved to Chicago. Maggie was still sick. We found a vet here that had other experiences with this disease and helped us take her off the medication little by little. It was just remarkable how well she did. She lost most of her hair, but it has all grown back now. The vet here in Chicago couldn't believe that she was put on such a high dosage, so you might want to watch that at first. But she is back to her old self. I cried a lot through that whole ordeal, and still cry when I think about it. If you would like to e-mail me please ask Jay for my e-mail address. I would be more than happy to answer any of your questions. I have been through this, and it would have helped had I had somebody to ask all the questions too. What your baby has, may not be White Dog Shaker, but it does sound like what we went through with Maggie. Please have it checked out. Maggie is well and as happy as ever. Good luck.

Joyce, I know you are worried sick! Have you thought about taking your baby to another vet for a second opinion? There is obviously something wrong. My thoughts are with you. Keep us posted.

Joyce, I read your message and my heart goes out to you. Your little one seems to have the same symptoms my Missie had. My vet thinks she has White Shaker Dog Syndrome and is treating her for it with medication. I say the vet "thinks" because all of Missie's test have come up negative. However the medication has improved her condition and now she is full of life again. The problem with this disease is that vets don't seem to know much about it. I found a lot of information about White Shakers from this site which my vet was very grateful for. Deffinatley get your vet to test for this condition. And get as much information as you can, knowledge is power when fighting these problems. Good luck and I hope your baby is well soon.

Thank you all..Jennifer & Maggie...Your message was the most hopefull i think you are correct. And predisone is the medication madison is on. We are now at 1/2 tab (2.5%mg) every other day. The day he is off he's not 100% but getting better. He still shakes, but not all the time, and he hasn't cried / yelped when I pick him up in over two weeks. I'm hoping were on the path to recovery. Your message was hopefull. I only wish I could have gotten on the internet sooner, for some reason i got booted out two months ago and couldn't back in, I was desperate to talk to all of you. Anyway, i will keep you posted. Jennifer / Maggie, how do I request your e:mail address from jay, I still have questions, and don't want to do a marathon message. Again, to everyone, thank you...i'm so happy to back on line.
Joyce
Joyce, I am not exactly sure how you do that. I just read that other people have said that on their posts. Maybe if you just post that question, Jay will respond. I would love to help you anyway that I can. I have tried to put my e-mail in my posts before, but when my post is posted, my e-mail is not on it. I don't know why???? But anyway, like I said, just post a question to Jay, then I'm sure he will give it to you. I'm looking forward to hearing from you. And I am very glad to hear that your baby is doing better. I know how hard it is, but believe me, it get better. I can't even keep up with Maggie now. She is wonderful!!! And your baby will be back to his normal self soon. Just give him lots of love. Hugs and Kisses from me and Maggie. Hope to hear from you soon.
