Messy eater
by I-Ling Ogawa
ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Messy eaterDien doesn't like facing his bowl when he eats. He always picks up some food, back up a few inches from his bowl, and chew. He always leave crumbs around. Any of your little ones are messy eaters like Dien?

DISCUSSION:

Diva likes to do the same thing. I got her a placemat, but she still goes off of it. At times she even throws her food into the air before she eats it. I have seen dogs do this with chickens years ago, maybe it is some throw back behavior.

Well Buster takes his food out of the bowl and takes it into the living room to eat it on the carpet. Doesn't like eating in the kitchen on the ceramic floor. I put a rug down with his food bowl and water bowl but he still takes bits of food in the living room. Amazing.

Moose & Squirrel eat so fast that they push everything off their plates onto the floor! They eat off saucers at the moment but I think that I will have to switch them to bowls.

My little boy is also a messy eater - he insists on taking every piece of meat/bone out of his bowl and placing it on his 'eating mat'. The best thing I purchased was a big mat to place under his bowl.

Lexie puts some kibbles in her mouth, walks into the living room, puts them on the carpet, and then eats them, one by one.

Angel likes to take her food just about anyplace except the kitchen where she started from. She'll either drop it in our laps, or on the sofa, or on the bathroom rug or even our bed. It's funny, I won't let my husband eat in the living room, but I don't have a problem with Angel doing it.

My girls are messy eaters too! They will take one kibble out of the bowl and go into the dining room(carpeting) and repeat this until they are full. The real problem is the moist food. They have tried to do this with that as well(can you imagine THAT mess?!). I put a stop to them doing that with moist food by putting up the baby gate so they have to eat in the kitchen. The food still comes off the plate and is dragged around my kitchen. I bleach my floor every day. They are worth the work though!

Tanner starts with his food in a bowl but then takes a mouthfull and takes it over to the carpet. I don't mind. My children love to vaccuum after Tanner eats.

Well, Chico likes to do the same sort of things. He always takes a bite of food, takes a few steps and eats. Then he goes back to the bowl and repeats this. I'm glad others are doing this, I was beginning to think this cutie was a little strange. :-)

Baxter is such a prissy little eater. Not a drop goes on the floor and he stands right at his bowl and eats. His face even stays clean - not a morsel anywhere. Rudy, on the other hand, makes every meal an event. He puts a half a mile on every kibble. When he starts out, he pick up a piece and heads for the living room, but on the way, he chews and swallows. He keeps going anyway till he gets there. Then he sits, looks back at the bowl, gets up and heads back. Half way through his meal, he starts making it all the way before he eats it, but by this time he's been to the living room, dining room and family room. Some of the kibbles he decides he's not interested in so they stay wherever he made up his mind not to eat that particular kibble. By the time he's done, the floors are covered, but funniest of all is the mess he's made of his face. Poor Baxter is such the typical first child. He just watches this whole process and shakes his head.

Well, I wouldn't call it a messy eater, it's just how many little dogs eat! Taffy carries a mouthful into the living room too. Sometimes she will place 3 or 4 kibbles in a small pile, then go get more and place in another pile. Then she lays down and stares at it a while, then eats them. Every little dog I have had has done this. When she is really hungry though, she stays at her bowl and eats. She has quit picking through her food because she is totally on the new food now and has no choice :).

Your not alone! Tasha would be a messy eater, but I put her in the crate for her meal, have to as I have another dog that is on a completly different diet and I don't want Tasha getting into the other food. When she is almost finished I will open the crate door and then it becomes messy, she also carries her dry food around the house.

I'm not really a "stand over the bowl and eat" kind of dog either. That's probably because I only get dry stuff. Mom put a fluffy rug on the floor for me between my bed and my bowl. I like to take 1 piece at a time from my bowl and crunch it real good on the rug so that all the little crumbs get stuck in the rug. Sometimes I put 3 or 4 pieces of kibble in my mouth and carry them into the living room to eat at my leisure. Daddy laughs at that and says "Are you having Take-Out tonite, Chloe." I don't know what that means, but he thinks it's funny.

Too funny....Socks takes one kibble...brings it to the living room...comes back, takes another, brings it to the living room...makes a nice little pile in the middle of the living room floor..then goes gets her "sock" and her tweety toy, places them next to the pile and sits and eats...I've watched her do this, not saying a word. I wish I had a video camera to video tape it..its amazing what she does...and its not only these things that she does this with. She sometimes gets into my back changing room, and grabs, well, lets just say my "personables" and such and does the same thing..one of these days I'll have company over and she'll do that..I just know it...and embarass me to death....

Maggie is a very messy eater. Just last night, I fed her some soft food mixed in with her dry food.(I was leaving for a couple hours and I wanted to make sure that she ate something. She rarely gets soft food. But I know she will eat it.) I went into the other room to get ready, and when I came back to her room, she had eaten all of the soft food, and the dry food was all over the carpet. She takes the hard pieces out of her bowl and throws them on the rug, so that she can eat the soft food without the hard food getting in the way. What a Rat!!!

Our little girls, Mitzi and Matty are two years old and really make feeding time a pain. They can hardly wait for the morning meal...they scratch on my leg and stare me down and I deliver this wonderful meal. Then there is no rush to eat and they usually lie back down and just stare at the bowl. It may take ten or more minutes before one will get up and sample it and sometimes walk off. I just don't understand this and it can take way too long. I have tried picking it up and then they are very concerned but may not eat when it is put back down. I have tried giving each one a separate bowl but that makes no difference. Have others had this problem?
