And when they say a hobo's life; is freedom from all kinds of strife, I have to laugh a little bit; for those who say that haven't lived it! It's not about being free and bold; it's tearing hunger, freezing cold You have to fight and bare your fangs; for just a scrap to still the pangs. You have no friends when on the run; you just look out for number one You know your life is very wrong; when there's no place you belong. But there are angels all around; for god sees us when he looks down And sends an answer to our prayer; a family to love and care. Yes, I was rescued one fine day; no longer am I called a stray. I lay here dozing by the fire; and know I have my heart's desire. If I could change one thing indeed; no animals would be in need. No lonely hobos here and yon-all the shelters closed and gone. So my prayer remains for all he sad creatures great and small. So here's to rescue, keep it going; it's love in action, ever flowing.... I know I'm loved by people dear- heaven must be just like here. (c)1998 PennStreetProductions. WHAT IS A RESCUE? When animals can no longer be kept by their owners, many owners are reluctant to take their animal to a shelter. They contact a rescue for their breed and ask them to place the animal in a new home. Most pure breeds have rescues. Some rescues only work with one breed, some with several. A rescue does not usually have puppies, is not a breeder and is not a shelter or a kennel, so they do not have an "inventory" of dogs the way a shelter does. The dogs available through a rescue are adult dogs who need new homes usually because of some unforeseen problem with their owners, such as death, moving, divorce, etc. When you contact a rescue, unlike a shelter, you are usually contacting a person's private home. Be aware of this and realize that you may be calling during the person's dinner, children's bath or bedtime, or during some other private home issue. You are NOT calling a shelter office. There are no shelter visiting hours. Sometimes an animal is in this home, or in another foster home, or still in it's original home waiting for a new one. Sometimes they don't have any for adoption, but will add your name to a waiting list. The rescue will usually want an application from you, either by mail or over the phone, and each has their own requirements regarding your suitability to adopt their breed, depending on their breed characteristics. There is always an adoption fee or "donation" requested. Barbara Ross SPECIAL RESCUE STORY Submitted by Libby SKIPPER- Mary Palmer was contacted 8/14/99 regarding a 7 year old Male Maltese, Skipper who was turned into The Waukesha Humane Animal Welfare Society. His owners (who had him for 2 yrs) said that Skipper was having accidents with the arrival of a new baby. Mary drove from Racine to Waukesha to pick up Skipper. He had been diagnosed as having urethral crystals that was controllable by diet. Mary had asked the shelter not to do anything with his coat but when she got there they had bathed and cut him down. Yes, as you can imagine Mary was upset but kept her cool. His teeth seemed to be worn down a lot probably from being caged (either puppymill or volume breeder) Mary took him home and said this little guy was wonderful and full of love. Along came MaryH who had lost her furbaby and wanted to give Skipper a happy, loving home. MaryH made arrangements to have Skipper flown to her. She kept us updated on his progress daily. In her words, Skipper is a magical little dog. They had to get use to the bathroom, feeding and bedtime schedules as Mary is on east coast time and Skipper was west coast. Mary took Skipper to the doctor and he has a clean bill of health. The vet was totally impressed with Skipper, his personality, health and charm. He even gave Skipper a hug. Skipper is not peeing in MaryH's house and is getting along with her Grace and Andy. Thanx Mary for giving Skipper another chance at life and a loving home. UPDATE ON CASPER - Dear Libby, Hello, How are you? We have been busy with our little fur baby. Casper is a joy; I can't ever see us without him. He has changed in the last 3 1/2 months since we adopted him. You will be happy to know he has gone to kindergarten and did very well, he doesn't bark or chase every bike now and he has almost stopped the nipping. Casper sits, heels lays down on commands and we are working on having him sit and give his paw. He loves to be cuddles and gives kisses when asked (or not asked HA! HA!). The groomer has him almost all even, he had so many mats and his face was badly stained. The pictures go from the (aqua color) one that was in the rescue page, to two little brown lion face ones after we adopted him, to sitting on a rocking chair and in his basket, to the one with the tan back ground was taken by Caspers trainer on the last class day! I also wanted to say thank you one more time for the I've been wanting to send you an update on my little one; I love him soooo very much. I pray all is well with you and your loved ones and pray that you have made out ok with the hurricanes. I keep in touch with the previous owner, but haven't heard how she made out through the storms, she's right in Wilmington, N.C. I'm sure I'll hear soon, she does forward me stuff so I know her computers ok! HA! HA! Talk with you soon Libby, Sincerely, Maureen MacDonald NOTE FROM MARY PALMER I have been working in rescue for the last 8 months and it is a never-ending thing. When I started out I thought I was going to make a difference. Now I realize the only difference I can make is in the few dogs' lives I help. I now realize there is no light at the end of the tunnel. How sad for us and for all of these innocent creatures. I realize we must have breeders out there to continue on with our breeds and hopefully to improve them. But I also hope when anyone hears about someone wanting to breed to have one of Fluffys pups that all of you try as much as you can to dissuade them from doing this. I wish everyone knew the horror stories I do. In the last weeks I don't sleep at night thinking about them.To really love our precious little dogs is to protect them, that means not only the ones in our homes but the ones in the shelters and alleyways all over. This means responsible breeding and placing in responsible homes there after. The holidays are coming and it is time for all to try a little harder to help. Think of donating a book of stamps to a shelter or rescue, or even prepaid phone cards, wow what my bills are!!!!!! Take a bag of food to a local shelter or treats. Dogs in shelters need treats too you know. If you want to get even more involved locally then offer to groom dogs or walk them in a shelter. Go spend an hour playing with dogs in a shelter. It is endless the things one can do to help with this job. Then I would hope maybe you would want to carry this on through out the year. If we don't help who will? The pain and suffering of all of those animals out there is more than one can imagine. Lets all look at the stars tonight and remember for every star you see is a dog in need. NATIONAL ANIMAL SHELTER APPRECIATION WEEK November 7th - 13th is National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week. It is sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States, based in Washington, DC. This is set up to recognize the efforts of shelter staffs and volunteers who work to find dogs homes. BUDDY'S GOSSIP COLUMN (Bianco's That's My Buddy) Daddy gave me my own email address so if you have any gossip worth printing please email me at: Buddy@malteseonly.com Well I hear KoKo and Shayna were in another Hurricane. Irene this time. Mom Shelley said the winds were only between 35-45 with gusts up to 55 or 60. If you ask KoKo she'll tell you a different story. Mom said KoKo was so funny this in her little red raincoat looking for a place to relieve herself. Just stayed long enough to piddle and wanted inside. And all of the time little Shayna is was asleep next to her Daddy. Nikki's Dolly finally finished and is now CH. C & M's Hello Dolly!!!!!!!! Way to go Dolly. But don't do too well Your brother Taylor is King...remember that! I'm sure he will remind you that he plans on going to Westminster. So look out! Comet is mad at mommie, Halen. Seems mommie and daddy went to Hawaii and left poor Comet with his human Brother. When mommie got home Comet barked at her when she came in the door and when she went to pick him up Comet ran away. Now Comet has mommie in "ignore" mode. See mommie...should have taken him with you! Truth or Gossip??? I hear thru the grapevine that Evel Knievel has gotten a Maltese! Can you believe it? Mr. Dare Devil himself. I waiting to hear from my sources to see if it's true and hope that maybe we can get a picture. See, it goes to show you that these furbabies can tame even the toughest souls. I hear AnneS's Chloe is blue right now? Really she is blue. Her human sister Morgan, dropped some blue food color on Morgan thinks Chloe looks like she has been tye dyed. But that is fine with Chloe, because she is enjoying her new look. Every kid in the neighborhood thinks she looks awesome, so she is not in any hurry for her mom to find a way to get it out of her fur. Guess this is the "Smurfy Look". Way to go Sparky! I am very proud to announce that MaryP's little big man "Sparky" won his first major win on Saturday in Illinois. He won a 4 point major as the Best of winners. You're on your way to stardom Sparky! Congratulations! That's it for the gossip for this month. Stay tuned. I'll be watching and listening for more. Until next month...keep your head out the window and your tail to the sky. Because we celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday with food, pet owners may be tempted to slip their Maltese a sampling of the feast. But even a seemingly innocent indulgence can cause problems for your Maltese. Most people have heard that turkey bones are dangerous to pets because they can splinter and the splinters can puncture the stomach or intestinal tract. But what people probably don't realize is that the fatty skin from the turkey can cause problems just as severe. Not only can fatty foods cause the usual digestive system upsets, but these foods can also trigger a pancreas inflammation. Symptoms of this condition include pain in the abdomen, diarrhea, vomiting, depression, and in severe instances can be fatal. Pancreas inflammation is most likely to occur in a middle-aged, inactive, overweight dog. Such symptoms could also signal less serious problems. Call your veterinarian and let him or her decide whether the symptoms sound bad enough to bring your Maltese in. Continuous vomiting or a combination of symptoms are worth a call to your veterinarian. Even if the problem is simply an upset stomach due to overindulging; it's better to seek advice than to try a home remedy. Sticking with commercial pet products as treats will avoid the problem. These products are not as likely to cause digestive problems as are table scraps. Even canned dog food can cause diarrhea in a dog that is used to dry dog food. Moderation is the best policy and completely avoid feeding fat and poultry bones. After your Thanksgiving feast, discard food scraps in a covered trash can. Many digestive problems result when a pet gets into the garbage. In general, cats don't seem to have as many digestive problems as dogs, although a sudden change in their diet can cause diarrhea. This may be due to the fact that cats are fussy eaters, making them less likely to eat potential problem-causing foods. If you feel that you must give your pets treats during the holiday, let your family and guests know that the treat shouldn't come from the table. Explain that the pet will get its own special commercial treat. Your pet will enjoy the holiday more without an upset stomach, and so will you. HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY THANKSGIVING FROM MALTESEONLY! l. DOG CHEWS RECALLED BY PET CHAIN STORE October 28, 1999 - Web posted at: 8:36 AM EDT (1236 GMT) Submitted by Zeyneb WASHINGTON (AP) -- A pet store is recalling a brand of Canadian-made dog chews because they may be contaminated with salmonella. Salmonella-tainted treats are not considered a risk for dogs. But pet owners who hand their dogs the treats could become infected if they then touch their mouths or their own food before thoroughly washing their hands. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration already was warning dog owners to wash after touching any dog chews made from pork- or beef-derived materials, including pig ears, beef jerky and pigskin. That is because Canadian health authorities have reported at least 30 dog owners sickened apparently by salmonella-tainted chews. But Wednesday, Pet Valu International Inc. took the additional step of recalling certain Rollover brand dog chews from its stores in New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. Recalled are the following Rollover products: garlic-flavored pig ears bearing UPC code 6076688023; cheese-flavored pig ears, UPC 6076688022; five-inch chews, UPC 6076688005; lambie chunks, UPC 6076688102; and dog chew hooves, smoked or plain, sold in bulk. "ASK THE DOG TRAINING INSTRUCTOR" by Vanetta Gibbs QUESTION: My Spencer is going to be 6 months on Saturday and he is still teething. I think that he is almost through that stage. What I wanted to know is when is he suppose to stop biting things and putting everything in his mouth. I understand that he is curious and that his gums hurt, but he even bites on his own bed. Is this normal? If not please help. If it is normal when should it stop? Thank you. Sincerely, Nidia E. Cordova & Spencer Cordova ANSWER: Well, first of all some dogs never stop as chewing is a healthy and normal thing which both puppies and grown dogs do. It's only good if they are chewing a proper chewing item made for that purpose. Chewing is not just needed for puppies. Chewing helps with keeping their teeth & gums strong and healthy. It's very important to be very firm toward Spencer when you really do not want him to chew an item. Then give him a proper chewing item in place of it. If you walk in a room and catch him chewing on a undesirable chewing item. Immediately start commanding, "No, no, no!", and take the item away with an angry looking face. If they don't pay attention to you by looking at you, try to get Spencer to look at you with your voice or some other sound like clapping or slapping your leg. If this doesn't work, you may need to get up close to their face to get the message across to them. However, if he has a tendency to nip or bite, don't do this. Then you get the desirable chew item and say; "You chew this! Chew this!" and in a pleasing but serious tone, give him the chewing item. If Spencer growls or bites at you when try to take the item, use Spencer's favorite toy to get it away and use it as the item he is to chew on. You will have to do this repeatedly, until finally the dog realizes what toys are to be chewed on and what is not to be chewed on. If you don't catch Spencer in the act of chewing the undesired item then show him what he chewed and say, "You see this?", "Look at what you did!", and then command, "No, no, no, no! Bad dog! Bad Spencer!". If Spencer doesn't seems show any remorse for the act by lowering head or batting their eyes or something, then don't continue doing this as he probably doesn't understand. Then give him the correct item and say; "Chew this! Good Boy!" as you take and put the undesirable chewing item behind your back, if possible. After you show it to Spencer and praise verbally then put the desirable chewing item behind your back while you bring the incorrect chewing item out from behind your back which is held in your other hand and say, "No! Bad dog! Bad Spencer!". Then swap. Put the bad item behind you and bring out the good item to chew from behind you and say "Good Dog! Chew this! Very good! Good Spencer!". Then leave the desired chewing item with him and take the disapproved item with you to put out of his reach, if possible. EAR PROBLEMS Submitted by Jay Bianco In a report published Saturday in The Lancet, Dr. Benoit Codey and colleagues at Rennes University Hospital in Rennes, France, describe the case of a 67-year-old man with a 40-year history of ear problems, including chronic inflammation of the right inner ear. According to the authors, in June of 1998 the patient was admitted to the hospital suffering from fever, confusion, headache, nausea, and stiffness of the neck. Computed tomography (CT) scans showed serious inflammation and damage to the inner ear and adjacent bony structures. Bacterial cultures revealed infection with Pasteurella multocida, a bacterium found in animal saliva, which can be passed to humans via bites. Pasteurella multocida has been isolated in the throats or respiratory tracts of veterinarians and other humans in frequent contact with animals, but the researchers note that "it has never been reported in the middle ear.'' However, after interviewing the patient, the investigators discovered that he "had a dog who frequently licked his right ear.'' The dog's saliva tested positive for the bacteria. Antibiotic therapy, followed by surgery, help rid the man of his illness. Codey and colleagues note that "when last seen in March 1999, the patient was well.'' They stress that - in most cases - patients with chronic ear disorders should not shun affectionate contact with their pets. However, they do recommend that patients diagnosed with perforated eardrums "avoid being licked on their ears by animals.'' SOURCE: The Lancet 1999;354,1267-1268. MALTESE LETTERS' TO SANTA Dear Santa, We tried very hard to be good all year long and hope you can help us out this Christmas. My name is Andy and I don't really need anything for myself. Instead, can you be especially good to all my friends at the nursing homes that I visit? The people who live there and work there always smile and give us lots of pats. I'm Grace and I have plenty of toys. This year could you skip me and be extra generous to all the animals and humans at the shelters you stop at? You see, Santa, I was born at a shelter and went to live with a human who lets me kiss her all I want!Skipper, here. My toy box is overflowing. Since I'm all set, would you bring good health and happiness to the families and foster families of National Maltese Rescue? They are very special people who are always there for us furbabies. Because of them I'm still alive to write this letter to you.Santa, we have one more little wish for us. When you're in our neighborhood, could you stop in our yard for just a minute? We've never seen real reindeer and we'd like to share some carrots with them.Thank you, Santa, for reading our letter. We wish all humans and their animal companions a holiday season and new year filled with love and peace. Andy, Grace and Skipper (MaryH) Dear Santa, For Christmas, I would want the new glow in the dark ball, new squeaky toys and some soft bite toys. I have been a very good boy this year and I will tell my mom to leave you some milk and cookies. thank you! Pinky (Clara Ip) Dear Santa, I have been such a good girl this year. I was sick for a couple months and worried my mommy, but I am doing ok now. I seem to have everything I need, plus a little bit more. I know that I am asking for a lot...but, Santa, if you could find homes for all the poor doggies who have no home, that would be the greatest gift. To stop the breeding in all the puppymills, and find them homes too. Santa, I will pray real hard too and help you. This is my wish for Christmas. Love, licks and a big wag, Taffy m. (RobinM) PS, I would accept a snuggly doggie bed to put on my couch for those days that I don't feel like snoozing in the bedroom all morning! IN MY OPINION Submitted by LibbyJ Our relationship with dogs is very interesting. The kind of love that exists between the owner and a dog has a meaning all its own. This relationship is special and different from all other relationships. Husbands/wives may come and go and children may grow up and leave home. A dog is forever. Dogs never withhold their love, they never get angry and leave, and they never go out looking for new owners. Doesn't it always seem to us that, somehow, our Maltese appears to understand and wants to share our burdens? Haven't we all seen that special look in our Maltese' eyes, that wag of the tail that's as impish as a wink, the gentle paw on our knee at just the right moment, the head cocked as if to ask us if everything is OK or one of those smiles we now know REALLY IS A SMILE and an invitation to forget - - even if just for a bit - - whatever it is that ails us and enjoy the genuine love they clearly know we need? If all we could rely upon was our own experience that dogs are wondrous healers of the things that wound and worry us, body and spirit, and that they are a medicine as beneficial as any created in the laboratories of science, for most of us, our own experiences would be proof enough of that truth. We have known for ages that dogs are good to us and for us and go far beyond the routine kinds of things we've asked them to do. READER FEEDBACK Do you have questions you would like feedback on from other readers? Ask in Reader Feedback. Dear Libby, I would be interested to know what readers think of microchipping their darlings. The state I live in have brought this into law and I feel so angry about it. It will now save any loved malties at all. Those who love their little ones are constantly watching after them. I wonder when they will bring in compulsory microchipping of babies? As is usual this new law will only hit the responsible dog owners, those who don't care, simply will not do it. I think it will deter real lovers not to have their pet registered. I wonder what the readers think? I'll be interest to see comments regarding this and to hear if it's compulsory in USA. Joyce THE BIG SLEEP-OVER By Halen & Comet The trip to Hawaii was set in stone and seemed so far away. The time was at hand and we had to make a decision of what to do with Comet while we were gone! Our son, Bruce, watched Comet before in our absence, but this time, he was finishing up job training, moving from one apartment to another, and still recovering from an eye injury. He will be too busy! I said and I can't ask him I declared! I'll have to try out a kennel and see how that goes. Ok, can't just plop him one day and leave him for 11 or 12 days, we'll work up to the big sleepover. I went about setting up several appointments; gradually working up to the time he would stay and stay. The kennel came highly recommended by several co-workers and it was fairly close. Your son can come and visit anytime he wishes, they told me. You can call and check on him, too. Ok, that sounds good. I brought all the paper work of vaccines, his vet, food choices and treats, his carrier, several favorite toys, two beds, several mats and a stack of wee wee pads, and Comet, of course! Do we change the pad with every use; they inquired, noticing the huge stack for one overnight? Oh, I brought a few extra incase he shreds them. Does he usually shred them? Well not at home, but you never know! Do you want him bathed they asked? No, he was just groomed last night, see how beautiful he looks! The place was clean and the staff pleasant. I said their vet could treat if necessary. It was awful leaving him in the kennel, but we were OK with it. I went to work and tried not to think about Comet and concentrated on my work. It didn't work! When I got home, I looked for Comet, was SURE I heard him bark, and it just wasn't the same. I missed him so, but knew it would be different when we were out of the house and in Hawaii, having a wonderful time. Comet would get so much attention from the staff because he's soo cute! Then it was time for bed. The house seemed so quiet and empty! I tried to watch the news, then I left the radio on with classical music all night. I tried to sleep, and the more I tried, the more I couldn't sleep! I couldn't wait to pick him up the next morning!!! I got out there before they opened and watched them unlock the door. He did just fine, they told me. I could hardly wait to see him. So many dogs barking and it was so noisy. Well, I saw Comet he looked like a poodle! His hair was no longer smooth and silky but kinda curly and matted! What happened to his hair I asked? Oh, we gave him a bath and he got scared of the hairdryer so we let him airdry. But I didn't want him bathed; it was on his record I said. Oh, we always bathe the dogs for flea prevention and sanitation. But He just had an application of Advantage and he doesn't have fleas! I thanked them and paid them and took Comet home. Other than looking like a poodle, he was OK. Our son came over and heard my lament! I'll stay here and watch Comet! I'll come right after work and stay overnight. You know I love Comet, too! OK, if you are sure. So the next day, I cancelled the other appointments for further sleepovers. I don't want to rule out this possibility, though and will still work on leaving him sometime in the future, but only while we are in town. I need to work up to this not Comet. They did write NO BATH in bigger letters for next time, so I'll give them another chance. ___________________________________________________________________ MALTESE HOROSCOPE The Scorpio Dog September 23 - November 21 The stars are arranged like this only once in a millennium.
