HEALTH NOTES Increase Your Maltese’ Chance To Fight Disease -The Key to Prevention is Early Detection!

The gradual onset of health problems in an apparently healthy Maltese often goes unnoticed. Once symptoms appear the condition may be too distressing and costly to diagnose and treat. Regular dental care, vaccinations, control of parasites and a balanced diet are important for good health care. Laboratory testing for the early detection of changes in the health status of your Maltese is important. Age is not a disease. There are many conditions, that if diagnosed early enough, can be completely reversed or controlled for extended periods of time. Laboratory tests are an important means by which we can diagnose blood disorders, kidney and liver disease, diabetes, infection, cancer, thyroid malfunction and other hormone problems. The promotion of quality Malts health care through a wellness program can add years of vitality and extend your pet’s life.

Did you know? A family pet is lost every 2 seconds? Ask your vet about micro chipping. Just like a vaccination-it’s injected under the skin of your pet where it remains for life. Have it done today for the safety of your pet!

PssstConquering Thunder Terror
My Maltese was terrified of thunderstorms. He would cry and hide under the couch. To help him get over this, we started playing a recording of a thunderstorm softly while he sat on his rug. We petted him, talking soothingly and feeding him Doggie Biscuits, while gradually increasing the recording’s volume. After a few weeks, he was comfortable with the noise. The next time it stormed, he was over his fear.

PssstEasing the Separation
Kiwi got upset when I left the house - and the rug showed it later! As soon as she heard keys and I put on my shoes, she started whimpering. Now I get ready to leave in a different order daily, and she doesn’t associate a certain pattern with me leaving. I also prepare a Kong Toy to give her when I am leaving so she is more interested in getting the treat out of the Kong Toy instead of what I am doing.

PssstCleaning up tearstain
One method (without bleaching) you might want to try would be to mix concentrated Magic Touch #1 and hydrogen peroxide (2% or 3% from the pharmacy--not the beauty shop variety) equal parts. Only mix enough for a week at a time so the peroxide doesn't lose its potency.(mix 1/8 cup Magic Touch, 1/8 cup peroxide). Apply it once or twice a day to the stained area with a cotton ball after combing out the hair. Using the Magic Touch concentrate helps prevent the hair from drying out too much from the peroxide. And as an added benefit, it might only takes a couple of weeks to clean it up completely. Magic Touch is a Crown Royale product and the toll-free number is 1-800-992-5400.
