Adopting a Senior Dog
Often in rescue we find for one reason or another we have senior dogs, 9 years or older. These are usually wonderful dogs that are not quiet as frisky as their younger counterparts, but just as loving and still playful.
By this time in life we know what those little personalities are and what health problems there might be if any. These gentle seniors make excellent pets and seem to adjust so easily.
Although Maltese are notorious for being lap dogs a senior will enjoy quiet time even more. They love to snuggle for extended periods of time and require less exercise than a younger dog. It is for this reason; they are a wonderful choice for senior citizens or anyone who likes a slower calmer life style.
Contrary to the old saying ”you can’t teach a old dog new tricks” seniors have gone through so many learning stages they are ready and willing to learn. Often times they know many tricks and have extensive training by previous owners.
These dogs are often only found in rescue because of the illness or physical problems
that the previous owner can’t continue care for their beloved pet. I hope you
will consider a senior dog if you are thinking of adoption for a new addition to
your family. These beautiful dogs deserve a comfortable home of love for
their remaining years, which can be considerable with proper care. They will reward
you many times over with love and devotion.

The Reason (to you from all your rescue dogs)
I would've died that day if not for you.
I would've given up on life if not for your kind eyes.
I would've used my teeth in fear if not for your gentle hands.
I would have left this life believing that all humans don't care
Believing there is no such thing as fur that isn't matted,
skin that isn't flea bitten, good food and enough of it, beds to
sleep on, someone to love me, to show me I deserve love just because I exist.
Your kind eyes, your loving smile, your gentle hands
Your big heart saved me...
You saved me from the terror of the pound,
Soothing away the memories of my old life.
You have taught me what it means to be loved.
I have seen you do the same for other dogs like me.
I have heard you ask yourself in times of despair
Why you do it
When there is no more money, no more room, no more homes
You open your heart a little bigger, stretch the money a little tighter
Make just a little more room...to save one more like me.
I tell you with the gratitude and love that shines in my eyes
In the best way I know how
Reminding you why you go on trying.
I am the reason
The dogs before me are the reason
As are the ones who come after.
Our lives would've been wasted, our love never given
We would die if not for you.

SPECIAL RESCUE STORY
By Libby Johnson
Gator is a 13 yr old lovable guy who use to enjoy the laid back environment and weather of Florida. Gators mom and dad had some family changes and had to turn Gator over to Rescue. Gator is an extremely laid back little guy. His family got him in Germany so he did some traveling to get to the United States. He loved being king of his house. Gator has been adopted by a wonderful family in Georgia. His new mom and dad say he is everything they could ever want. He is a joy to them and loves to eat and go for long walks. Gator is adjusting well and his mom and dad send their thanks to Northcentral Maltese Rescue, Inc. Quote: “You and Gator have made our home very special”. Again…there is much love an older Maltese can give to a family if they are willing to give the senior a chance.
