Leash training
I have a 4 month old Maltese and he is free to run in our fenced
backyard. Although I would like to take him for walks around
the block with a leash and collar. He absolutely hates it.
He'll sit down and not move. Does anyone have any suggestions
on how to begin the this type of training? Thanks in advance.

- Your Maltese is just a baby still and just learning. Let him get use to a
leash, by just dragging it around a little. Then when you want too walk him
us a favorite treat or toy to tempt him to move forward as you encourage him
with your voice. That should get you started.

- Our maltese behaved in the same manner. We encouraged him to come, by
enticing him with a treat, he would come, dragging his leash behind him. We
started with just a short distance, gradually increasing the amount he would
need to travel to receive his reward. He finally overcame this fear, and we
took obedience classes, and in our fianl exam, came in 3rd place out of 22
dogs. Keep on working with him, and just be patient.

- I have the same problem. I also have a 4 months old maltese, he just
finished his shots 2 weeks ago. Last Friday, I brought him and my other dog
to the Pet Club, that was the first time I put a leash on him. He just sat
on the ground and not walking or running. Then, my friend told me to train
him on leash at home. Let him walk with you, when you stop, he stops, you
walk, he begins to walk. I hope this would help you out a little.
