Seizures
My 3 year old maltese has had 4 seizures in the past three monthes.
mt vet does not seem to be to concerned. Does anyone out there have
this problem or now why it happens? I have 3 maltese all from the
one older who happens to be the mother and one younger who is a sister
from a later litter, could this be hereditary? should I worry
about the other.
Ginnie
- Hi Ginnie: Could you give us a little more details about what your dog
does? I can tell you that my Maltese will have a breathing problem now and
then. She will seem to *freeze* in one spot and try really hard to breathe
in. It sounds like she is having a difficult time with it. Is this what
you are seeing? I also have asked different Vets about this and some say it
is internal sneezing and also they seem not to be too concerned about it. I
have only seen this in one other Maltese. Does anyone else know of this
condition?
Teri
- It is normal for Maltese to stop and stand there and make snorting sounds,
just pick it up get it to relax put your hand over its nose for three
seconds take your hand away if needed repeat it is just that they get things
going the wrong way, usually when they get excited.
- My 4 year old Casper has been having seizures for 2 1/2 years. He has
them often - usually 3 in a row of about 15 seconds each. He gets
phenobarbital 3 times daily and potassium bromide; plus diazapan
when he has the seizures. At first the vets just kept increasing the
medicine. Until one vet told us to divide it up through the day and
decreased it to 60 mg a day. Anyway, there seems to be no hope for him
except that we love him enough to try to help him. I've thought of
acupuncture or other alternatives but no info available. Anyway I hope
yours is ok - watch out mostly for "cluster" seizures (more than one at a
time). Have you received any other info? And make sure you don't cover him
or try to keep him warm. Their body temps rise and they can suffer severe
brain damage as a result. Also, watch him closely after - he'll need a
little time to regain his composure and mine likes water due to increased
thirst. Hope your's is just a passing phase which sometimes they are.
