Question about Allergies for the Maltese Breeders
The dermatologist who is treating my dog for allergies (atopic dermatitis)
told me the Maltese breed is at high risk for allergies which are usually
inherited. Can breeders guarantee (within reason) their puppies won't
develop allergies? Mine started having problems at about 8 months
old...it's been a very frustrating and expensive experience. I also wonder
why none of the Maltese books I've read mentioned allergies as being a
problem with this particular breed.
- Sorry but I don't believe a breeder can guarantee against allergies. I am a
responsible breeder and would always take a puppy back, but how can you
guarantee allergies. For one thing, the breeder can not control the
environment at your home. What about perfumes, do you wear them? If your
house is pier and beam, do you have a mold problem? New carpet can be
extremeling bad on people with allergies. Actually, my husband is allergic
to all those thngs, not my dogs. However, if he could be bothered so could
dogs. As sad as it is, I'm afraid the breeder can't control allergies.Sorry your dog is having problems.

- Liza,
Thank you for your response. I realize a breeder cannot control the
environment inside a buyer's house. But, if buyers of puppies from the same
litter report back to the breeders that those puppies have well documented
allergies to grass, trees, and weeds, would the breeder feel obligated to
discontinue using the parents of those puppies as breeding stock? Sorry, if
I'm beginning to sound like a "nag" but I'd like to become as informed as
possible to prevent myself from ever purchasing another allergic
dog...to the extent such a thing is possible.
