Lost or Missing Maltese

ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
by Betty

Lost a male maltese named Toro. Any advise or search methods we can use? We placed ads in local newspapers, called area vets. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

DISCUSSION:

My heart goes out to you, hope you find your little one soon. Make sure you call the Humane Society/animal shelters in your area. I remember seeing a TV show about how it broke their hearts to see animals come in that they knew were pets, but their owners never claimed them. Good luck!

I would check all the city kennels too where they may have picked up the animal seen wandering around or someone may have called and the city picked it up. A suggestion. Hope your dog had tags and/or the chip. Best wishes. I know you must feel scared. I will pray for your little one's safe return.

Take a picture, description, etc. to all your groomers. When people find a pet such as a Maltese, the first thing they usually do is have it groomed.

Betty, Hope you find Toro soon. I guess by now you've scoured the neighborhood--you might tell any neighborhood children (as well as parents) to keep an eye open. Maybe he is nearby and is not sure how to get home. I will keep good thoughts for you.

I'm so sorry you lost your little one. In our area posters with pictures of lost dogs are posted around the neighborhood any where you can fine to staple them up. Xeroxing a photo of your little one with your phone # may help.

Thank you for all of your suggestions. Your help gives me renewed hope.

Betty, Here are some suggestions. I wish you luck.

  1. Visit ALL of your local shelters every two or three days. Many times a pet will be lost near it's home, but it will be turned in at another shelter.
  2. CALL and leave a "Lost Pet Report" with all area shelters in your area.
  3. Call the shelters regularly until your Maltese is found. People will often feed a stray animal for a while hoping it will find its way home. Weeks may pass before a "found pet" is reported or brought in to a shelter.
  4. Go door to door in your neighborhood to see if anyone has seen your Maltese, also ask your newspaper delivery person and your mail person.
  5. Put up "Lost Pet" signs in your neighborhood
  6. Place "Lost Pet" report in the newspapers.
  7. Read the newspaper "Found Reports" every day.

If you would like I would be glad to post something on our bulletin board to help. If you have a picture, I'll post that for you too. Just send me an email with all pertinent information.

Another thing to do is make up a poster with the dogs Name, photo and your phone #, also if you offer a reward you will be more likely to get the dog back, if the dog has a tatoo mention that too. I would take it to all the vets offices in your area and ask them to let you post it.

Dear Betty, This is so sad. I have you in my thoughts and prayers. I had a friend once who lost her dog and had tried everything with no luck. Finally, she contacted all the children she saw in her area, showed them a picture of the dog, and offerred them $50.00 if they found him. That is a small fortune to a child (and some of the rest of us, too), and several kids got really busy on foot and on bicycles looking everywhere. They found the dog just a few blocks away from its owner, being "cared for" in someone else's backyard. Maybe you could try this.
