Tonight while I was giving my 8 mo. old Maltese a bath I noticed brownish spots on his skin, underneath his coat. Should I be concerned or is this common. Thanks!

I wouldn't worry. I think thats very common. It's like birthmarks or freckles.... like us! There skin is so white, everything shows.

Both of mine have them as well. Cloud's developed at around a year as well (he's five). As far as I understand they are common. I've seen some posts related to this before on this site. Someone said that they have seen them darken in the summer and fade in the winter. I think they are basically like freckles just a pigmentation in the skin.
